Virtuos has expressed interest in bringing two of Rockstar Games’ biggest titles, Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, to the Nintendo Switch and potentially the Nintendo Switch 2.
The comments come from Virtuos technical director Andy Fong in a recent interview, where he discussed the studio’s future ambitions for major platform ports and remasters.
Virtuos Targets Major Rockstar Games for Future Ports

Virtuos is widely known for its work on high-profile remasters and console ports across multiple generations of hardware. The studio has previously contributed to titles such as L.A. Noire on Nintendo Switch, as well as other major ports including XCOM 2 and The Outer Worlds.
In the interview with Pocket Tactics, Fong stated that the team is particularly eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 for Nintendo’s hybrid platform.
According to Fong, the studio believes both games could perform strongly on the system, offering a new way for players to experience two of the most commercially successful open-world titles of all time in a portable format.
Massive Sales Potential for Handheld Play

Grand Theft Auto V has sold more than 225 million copies across multiple generations of consoles and PC, making it one of the best-selling video games in history. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed 82 million units sold globally, continuing to grow years after its original release.
A potential Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 release could significantly extend the reach of both titles, particularly among players who prefer handheld gaming or have not previously experienced Rockstar’s open-world games.
Given the Nintendo Switch’s massive install base and the growing expectations around Nintendo Switch 2 hardware capabilities, industry observers have long speculated that major third-party ports like these could become more technically feasible in the near future.
Virtuos’ Experience With Rockstar and Major Ports

Virtuos is no stranger to working with Rockstar Games properties. The studio previously developed the Nintendo Switch version of L.A. Noire in 2017, along with enhanced ports for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
More recently, Virtuos has expanded its reputation through work on major remasters, including contributions to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered alongside Bethesda Game Studios. The studio has also been involved in high-profile projects such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
This experience positions Virtuos as one of the key external developers capable of handling large-scale optimization work required to bring demanding open-world games to more hardware-constrained systems like the Nintendo Switch.
No Official Confirmation Yet From Rockstar or Nintendo

Despite Virtuos expressing enthusiasm for the idea, there has been no official confirmation from Rockstar Games or Nintendo regarding ports of Grand Theft Auto V or Red Dead Redemption 2.
Both games remain technically demanding, especially in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is widely considered one of the most resource-intensive open-world titles of its generation. Any potential Nintendo Switch version would likely require significant optimization or scaled-down visual settings to run effectively.
Still, with continued advances in porting technology and the anticipated capabilities of Nintendo Switch 2, industry interest in bringing major AAA titles to Nintendo hardware remains strong.
What This Could Mean for Nintendo Players
If either title does eventually arrive on Nintendo platforms, it would represent a major expansion of Rockstar’s presence in the handheld gaming space. It would also further solidify Nintendo Switch 2 as a viable destination for large-scale third-party open-world experiences.
For now, Virtuos’ comments remain an expression of interest rather than an active development announcement, but they highlight ongoing industry momentum toward expanding blockbuster console titles to more flexible gaming systems.
