Forza Horizon 6 is making a notable design change for its Japan-inspired open world, as developer Playground Games confirms that players will not be able to destroy certain culturally significant elements within the game world.

The decision reflects a growing industry-wide effort to balance open-world freedom with cultural sensitivity, especially in games set in real-world-inspired locations. While the Forza Horizon series is known for its high-speed, fully destructible environments, the latest entry takes a more selective approach to environmental damage in order to respect Japan’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

According to the development team, certain trees and structures in the Japan-based map have been made indestructible, particularly cherry blossom trees and select cultural landmarks. While most of the environment in Forza Horizon 6 remains fully destructible, these specific elements are intentionally protected to avoid inappropriate interactions.

Design director Torben Ellert described the game as a “simcade” experience, blending realistic driving physics with arcade-style freedom. This balance allows Playground Games to maintain the franchise’s signature chaotic driving gameplay while still making deliberate exceptions for culturally important objects.

In addition to trees, some temples and sacred locations have also been removed or adjusted so that players are not encouraged to drive through or damage culturally sensitive areas.

Recent controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows played a role in shaping how developers approach these issues. Ubisoft faced criticism after players were able to destroy sacred objects in shrines, leading to public backlash and eventual adjustments to make such elements indestructible.

In interviews, the development team emphasized that careful research into Japan’s traditions and beliefs influenced how environmental elements were handled. This includes references to the spiritual significance of certain trees, which in Japanese tradition can be marked as sacred through symbols such as shimenawa ropes, indicating that they should not be disturbed.

This cultural context helped inform the decision to preserve cherry blossom trees and select environmental features, even within a game that otherwise encourages high-speed destruction and off-road chaos.

Balancing Realism and Gameplay Freedom

Despite limiting destruction in specific areas, Forza Horizon 6 still maintains a highly interactive environment. Most trees, vegetation, and terrain objects remain fully destructible, preserving the series’ signature sense of speed and impact.
