Veteran game developer Vince Zampella has passed away at the age of 55, according to confirmed reports and an official statement from Electronic Arts. The company described his death as an “unimaginable loss” for both the industry and those who worked closely with him.

While authorities confirmed that the passing followed a traffic incident in Southern California, officials have not released further details. At the time of writing, Respawn Entertainment has also been contacted for comment.
A Defining Figure in Modern Gaming
Zampella stood among the most influential creators in modern video game history. He co-founded Infinity Ward and helped create the original Call of Duty, a franchise that reshaped first-person shooters worldwide. Later, in 2010, he co-founded Respawn Entertainment alongside Jason West.

Under his leadership, the studio earned acclaim for Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Each title showcased a strong focus on gameplay feel, storytelling, and player experience. In 2017, Electronic Arts acquired Respawn Entertainment. Even then, Zampella continued to guide the studio’s creative direction and long-term vision.
Leadership Beyond Respawn
Beyond Respawn, Zampella also took on a broader leadership role within EA. He oversaw development teams working on the Battlefield franchise, helping shape its future during a critical period for the series.

Through these roles, he influenced not just individual games, but entire studio cultures. As a result, many developers credit him for setting creative standards that still guide major projects today.
Industry Tributes and Lasting Legacy
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from across the games industry. EA praised Zampella as a visionary creator whose work inspired millions of players and developers around the world. Washington Post video game critic Gene Park described him as a humble and thoughtful designer.

According to Park, Zampella understood how to create experiences that resonated on a human level. Ultimately, Vince Zampella’s legacy lives on through the games he helped create and the teams he inspired. His influence will continue to shape the industry for years to come.
