Ubisoft has confirmed that around 40 developers at its Toronto studio have been let go as part of the company’s ongoing cost-cutting efforts in 2026. Despite the job cuts, the studio says work on the long-awaited Splinter Cell remake is continuing.
MobileSyrup was first to break the news, and Ubisoft followed up with an official statement shared with GameSpot. “Following the recent announcement of the final phase of Ubisoft’s global cost-savings plan and the discontinuation of projects, Ubisoft Toronto will be reducing its workforce by 40 roles,” the company said. Ubisoft also noted that those affected will receive severance packages and career support.
These layoffs are part of a broader shake-up at Ubisoft that kicked off earlier this year. Back in January, the company announced plans to reorganize itself into several “Creative Houses,” each focused on specific game franchises. That announcement came alongside more layoffs, a return-to-office policy, and the cancellation of multiple projects, that have led some developers to go on strike and call for CEO Yves Guillemot to step down.

Ubisoft Toronto is one of the studios caught up in all of this. The studio has a solid track record, having led development on games like Watch Dogs: Legion and Far Cry 6, as well as serving as a co-developer on various other Ubisoft titles. It is also the studio behind Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the last entry in that series before it went quiet for years.
The Splinter Cell remake was first teased back in 2021, but there has been very little news about it since then, aside from occasional reports about changes within its development team. Now, despite the layoffs, Ubisoft confirmed that the game is still in development at the Toronto studio. The studio will also continue working as a co-development partner on Rainbow Six and other projects going forward.
