Star Citizen is on track to reach an unprecedented $1 billion in player funding sometime in 2026. However, despite the project’s massive financial success, its long-awaited singleplayer campaign may still miss next year.

Funding Continues to Surge

Roberts Space Industries’ ambitious space sim continues to attract enormous player spending. As of now, Star Citizen has accumulated roughly $925.6 million in total funding. Previously, the game crossed the $800 million mark in April, and since then, the total has steadily climbed over the past eight months. At its current pace, the project should surpass $1 billion around July or August 2026, placing it among the most expensive games ever developed.

Originally, the project relied on traditional crowdfunding. Today, however, funding comes from microtransactions, paid alpha access, and premium virtual ships. Notably, some of these digital spacecraft sell for tens of thousands of dollars. As a result, Star Citizen’s funding model remains both highly profitable and deeply controversial.

Alpha Development Still Ongoing

Despite ongoing criticism, Star Citizen has remained playable in alpha for several years. While progress has been slower than many hoped, the game has expanded steadily over time. Earlier this month, RSI released Alpha 4.5, titled Dawn of Engineering, which introduced a dedicated engineering role for players.

With this update, players can manage ship power systems, repair or replace damaged components, and respond to onboard fires caused by combat or system failures. These additions aim to deepen cooperative gameplay during ship encounters. Even so, many players continue to question the overall development timeline.

Squadron 42 Release Still Uncertain

One of the biggest unanswered questions remains the status of Squadron 42, Star Citizen’s singleplayer campaign. RSI previously targeted a 2025 launch window for the story-driven experience. However, the campaign’s absence from this year’s CitizenCon presentation raised fresh concerns among fans.

RSI explained that the team chose to prioritize development work over public showcases. Content director Jake Huckaby admitted the 2025 target remains uncertain, stating the studio would do everything possible to meet that goal.

A Long Road to 1.0

As for Star Citizen’s full release, Chris Roberts recently projected a 1.0 launch window in either 2027 or 2028. Naturally, that extended timeline continues to frustrate parts of the community.
