Nintendo wrapped up its fiscal year ending March 2026 with some impressive numbers for the Nintendo Switch 2, and company president Shuntaro Furukawa sat down for a Q&A session to break it all down.
When Nintendo launched the Switch 2 in June last year, they initially hoped to sell 15 million units by the end of the fiscal year. Then they bumped that estimate up to 19 million. The actual result? 19.86 million units sold. That puts the Switch 2 ahead of even the original Nintendo Switch’s pace of adoption, which is saying a lot given how well that system performed.
Furukawa credited a mix of factors for the strong start: pre-launch experience events around the world that built excitement, the system’s ability to play original Switch games, and key software releases that kept momentum going throughout the year. Animal Crossing: New Horizons got a Switch 2 Edition and a free update in January, and Pokémon Pokopia launched in March and drove a noticeable boost in hardware sales heading into the new fiscal year.
On the topic of Pokémon specifically, the IP is in strong shape heading into its 30th anniversary year. Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen sold over 4 million units in their first six weeks as download-only titles. Pokémon Pokopia hit 4 million units in five weeks and Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves were already confirmed for 2027. Furukawa noted that game development takes longer now than it used to, but said the team is working on adjustments to keep a steady stream of titles coming. More games beyond what has already been announced are in the works for the second half of the year, with details to come later.
Recently, Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 hardware prices will be revised upward in the system’s second year. Furukawa cited rising memory and component costs, shifts in foreign exchange rates, and oil prices as ongoing pressures that are not expected to go away anytime soon. He described it as a difficult decision made to keep the business healthy over the long term.

For the current fiscal year ending March 2027, Nintendo is forecasting 16.5 million Switch 2 hardware units sold and around 60 million software units across both Switch and Switch 2. It is worth noting that the software forecast does not include bundled titles, unlike last year’s figures.
