If you are new to Digimon Story: Time Stranger, there is one system you must understand: the Personality system. It is one of the most complex features in the game, especially since there is no complete in-game explanation. Without guidance, players are forced to experiment, which can lead to wasted stats and missed skills.
This guide explains how the Personality system works, the structure of Bonds, and the ways you can manage them for the best results.
System Structure
The Personality system is built on four Bonds, with each Bond linked to four Personalities, for a total of 16. Every Bond provides one type of stat bonus, while each Personality under that Bond adds another. This means your Digimon always gain two separate boosts, never stacking the same type.

You can increase these bonuses further by investing Anomaly Points into Bond skill trees under Agent Skills. Doing so also raises your Agent Rank, which is required to unlock stronger Digivolutions.
Here’s a breakdown of each Bond and its Personalities:
| Bond | Bond Bonus | Personality | Personality Bonus |
| Philanthropy | +SPI | Adoring | +DEF |
| Devoted | +INT | ||
| Tolerant | +SP | ||
| Overprotective | +HP | ||
| Valor | +ATK | Zealous | +SPD |
| Brave | +SP | ||
| Reckless | +HP | ||
| Daring | +DEF | ||
| Wisdom | +INT | Enlightened | +SP |
| Sly | +HP | ||
| Astute | +SPD | ||
| Strategic | +SPI | ||
| Amicability | +DEF | Opportunistic | +SPI |
| Friendly | +ATK | ||
| Sociable | +SP | ||
| Compassionate | +HP |
This structure ensures every Personality build feels different. The choice you make also impacts which exclusive Personality Skills you gain.
Personality Skills

Each Personality grants access to unique skills that shape how a Digimon performs in battle. Some focus on healing, others on physical or magical attacks, while others provide support and utility. These skills can be gained through battle, training, or conversion, though RNG often decides which you receive. The good news is that you can keep favored skills even after switching to a new Personality, allowing for creative hybrid builds.

What’s the Benefit?

The Personality system defines how Digimon grow. By combining stat boosts and exclusive skills, you can shape them into specific roles. For example, a DPS-focused Digimon benefits from the Valor Bond’s +ATK bonus alongside skills like Fast Break or Steadfast Might.

On the other hand, Philanthropy suits support builds thanks to its healing-focused skills. Since you can retain skills even after Personality changes, experimentation is highly rewarding. This opens the door to powerful hybrid builds.
How to Change Personality
There are several ways to change a Digimon’s Personality, and each method provides different levels of control. The most common approach is through battles followed by conversations with Digimon. After combat, they may ask questions, and your answers will influence their Personality shift. If their current Personality is already close to another option, a single response may cause an immediate change, often followed by the choice of whether to adopt a new skill.

Another method is through the Digifarm at the In-Between Theater, managed by Mirei Mikagura. Training Digimon here with specific item sets not only helps boost stats but also nudges them toward new Personalities. The Digifarm also makes the transition more transparent, displaying a yellow arrow to indicate direction. However, training sessions take 30 minutes, so this method requires more patience.

Lastly, the Digiline system allows you to interact with Digimon remotely. This is especially useful when you cannot physically engage with them in certain locations. However, you need to remain idle for a few seconds until the dialogue icon appears, which can sometimes feel tedious.

The Personality system in Digimon Story: Time Stranger adds another layer of depth to raising Digimon. It is not just about leveling or evolving them, but also tailoring their traits and skills.
