During gamescom 2025, we had the chance for a hands-on preview with Pearl Abyss’ upcoming action RPG, Crimson Desert. Our brief 15-minute session with the game mostly on the tutorial content gave us a taste of what could be one of the most ambitious medieval fantasy games in recent years.
Right off the bat, Crimson Desert impresses with its visual presentation. The game looks stunning, showcasing Pearl Abyss’ proprietary BlackSpace Engine in full effect. The continent of Pywel comes alive with realistic lighting, dynamic weather systems, and breathtaking landscapes featuring rock cliffs and mountain ranges that serve as backdrops to the action. Players familiar with Red Dead Redemption will find the UI design surprisingly familiar.

Story and Combat
The game follows Kliff, a member of the Greymane group who gets separated from his companions after an ambush by their enemies, the Drunken Black Bears. Our preview focused on Kliff’s journey to the region of Calphade, where he becomes caught up in a violent rebellion led by Cassius Morten against the local lord, Marquis Stefan Lanford.
Since this is an open-world RPG, movement isn’t just walking or horseback riding, the game also features unique traversal options.. Kliff can soar with Crow’s Wing, glide across huge gaps, on top of that, the Axiom Force skill doubles as both a mobility boost and a combat trick, letting you chain movement directly into battle.

What we experienced of the combat system shows real promise, even if it feels overwhelming at first. Kliff can switch between multiple weapons and has access to an Axiom Bracelet that adds fire, lightning, and ice effects to his attacks. Fire-enhanced arrows explode on impact, while ice attacks can freeze enemies, letting you shatter them with follow-up strikes.
However, the game’s complexity became apparent almost immediately. The control scheme is quite involved, perhaps because the developers wanted to showcase as many features as possible during the demo. Combat alone offers an overwhelming number of options – there are three different types of parries you can perform, which gives you an idea of how deep the systems go.

Large-Scale Warfare and Tools
One of Crimson Desert’s most impressive features is its massive battle scenes. The game promises epic-scale warfare with countless NPCs fighting across sprawling battlefields. Artillery flies overhead while soldiers clash with swords, creating what looks like a genuine war zone complete with smoke and flames.

During our short session, it became clear that Crimson Desert gives players a different number of tools to work with. From different combat stances to various magical abilities, there’s definitely a steep learning curve ahead. While this depth could be rewarding for dedicated players, it might feel intimidating for newcomers to the genre.
Final Thoughts
Based on our brief time with the game, Crimson Desert appears to be shaping up as a visually impressive and mechanically complex adventure. The game’s ambition is clear – Pearl Abyss wants to create a deep, immersive medieval world with plenty of combat options and strategic depth.
In fifteen minutes, it showed us crunchy, satisfying combat, flashy elemental skills, cinematic boss battles, and traversal tools that make the open world feel alive. We do think this action RPG has something unique to offer into the genre. Whether this complexity will enhance or hinder the final experience remains to be seen. For now, Crimson Desert looks promising for players who enjoy learning intricate systems and don’t mind a challenge.
