Toshiyuki Itahana, one of the defining artistic voices behind Final Fantasy IX, has officially left Square Enix to begin working as a freelance illustrator and character designer. The announcement was shared directly by Itahana and marks the end of a long career at the company. For many fans, this departure closes an important chapter in Square Enix’s creative history.
Most notably, Itahana served as one of the main character designers for Final Fantasy IX. He worked alongside Shūkō Murase and Shin Nagasawa to shape the game’s memorable cast. As a result, characters such as Zidane Tribal and Garnet became instantly recognizable. The game’s art direction, which leaned into a storybook fantasy tone, is still widely praised today. Even years later, it remains a visual standout within the Final Fantasy series.
A Career That Extended Beyond Character Design

However, Itahana’s influence at Square Enix extended far beyond a single title. He was the main character designer for the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles series as well as the long-running Chocobo spin-off games. Through these projects, he helped define a softer and more whimsical visual identity that appealed to a broad audience.
In addition, Itahana contributed to many major Final Fantasy entries in different capacities. These include Final Fantasy XI, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Mobius Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy Explorers. He also worked on Final Fantasy XIV, where his contributions ranged from UI and community design to later character concept work for Dawntrail. Consequently, his artistic footprint can be found across multiple eras of the franchise.
Leadership Roles and Game Direction

Importantly, Itahana was not limited to illustration work alone. He also stepped into leadership roles during his time at Square Enix. His first project as a game director was Code Age Commanders, an action RPG released on PlayStation 2 in 2005. Later, he directed Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Wii in 2009. Through these titles, he demonstrated a broader creative vision that went beyond character art.
Why the Timing Felt Right

In his departure message, Itahana explained that the decision came after serious reflection. Specifically, he wanted to prepare himself to continue drawing for many years to come. At the same time, 2025 marked the completion of his work on the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy IX. Because of this, the timing felt natural.
Moreover, he expressed deep gratitude to fans who took part in the anniversary celebrations. These included exhibitions, themed shops, and collaboration cafés. Seeing continued enthusiasm for Final Fantasy IX left a strong impression on him.
Looking Ahead as a Freelancer

Having left Square Enix at the end of 2025, Itahana is now beginning a new phase as a freelance illustrator and character designer. While he admitted that he is still adjusting and learning from senior freelancers, he remains optimistic. Ultimately, he hopes fans will continue to support his work wherever it appears next.
