During our one-hour preview of Death Note: Killer Within at a recent Bandai Namco media event, we explored how the game blends social deduction elements with the intense, psychological atmosphere of Death Note. For newcomers, social deduction games challenge players to outwit one another by hiding or uncovering secret roles. The global success of Among Us has popularized this genre, where players complete tasks while identifying impostors. Death Note: Killer Within builds on this formula but incorporates unique mechanics and lore from Death Note, creating an experience that feels true to the series.

Game Basics and Team Structure

The game supports up to ten players, each assigned to either Team Kira—made up of Kira and a follower—or L’s team of Inspectors, chosen at the start. Each team has distinct goals, encouraging deception, strategy, and quick thinking. Gameplay unfolds in rounds, or “days,” divided into two phases: the Action Phase and the Meeting Phase.

Gameplay Phases: Action and Meeting

In the Action Phase, players take actions to advance their team’s objectives. Team Kira works to eliminate targets, while L’s Inspectors gather evidence to expose Kira. Both teams can also win by filling their respective progress bars to 100%. The Meeting Phase allows players to discuss findings through in-game chat, strategize, and vote on suspects. This setup adds layers of tension as players try to determine allies and foes.

This structure creates a dynamic interplay between roles: Kira’s team must carefully eliminate threats while staying hidden, while L’s team collaborates to uncover the truth.

Action Phase: Advancing Team Objectives

To succeed, Kira must “kill” other players, with L as the top target. However, just as in the story, Kira can only kill after learning a player’s true name. To gather names, he and his follower must discreetly steal identification (ID) cards from Inspectors, which fills up a gauge automatically when they’re close enough to one another. Kira’s follower also assists by gathering IDs and taking the Death Note from Kira when needed, to keep him safe. Notably, Kira’s team knows each other’s identities from the start, while Inspectors must deduce every player’s true allegiance.

The Role of the Death Note in Gameplay

The game’s dynamics shift further with Kira’s ability to pass the Death Note. When Kira hands it to a follower, that follower becomes the “new” Kira, adding an extra layer of deception. However, using the Death Note comes with risk: when activated, players nearby can see the Death Note’s use, making it easier for Inspectors to locate Kira. This high-risk, high-reward element creates suspense as Kira’s team balances secrecy with the need to act.

Inspector Investigations and L’s Surveillance Tools

Meanwhile, L and the Inspectors have special tools and tasks during the Action Phase. L can assign Inspectors to cases through joint investigations, where two investigators work together. This approach can trap Kira’s team members, as they must approach Inspectors closely to steal IDs. Completing cases fills Team L’s progress bar and can lead to a win if Inspectors successfully gather enough evidence, even without exposing Kira.

L also has access to town cameras, enabling him to remotely monitor suspicious activity. This makes L’s team better equipped to watch key spots and catch Kira when he attempts to use the Death Note or steal IDs.

Command Cards and Strategic Deception

Killer Within introduces various command cards that Kira can use to direct Inspectors to certain areas, increasing ID theft opportunities. Team Kira often exploits these moments, as players focused on solving cases become temporarily immobilized on-screen, with no way of telling who’s nearby thus leaving them vulnerable.

Meeting Phase: Voting and Handcuffing Mechanics

At the end of each day, the Meeting Phase begins. L gathers everyone to discuss events and vote on suspects. If a player is deemed suspicious but lacks the Death Note, they are “arrested” and handcuffed to a fellow investigator assigned by L, with their ID exposed, making them vulnerable for Kira. The arrest requires a majority vote and adds strategy. However, if the suspect has the Death Note, Team L wins the game.

Rewards and Customization

Whether you win or lose, each match rewards players with points to the in-game customization track that unlock cosmetic items for character customization to further personalize the look of your avatar. These include nameplates, costumes, accessories and more.

While we only had an hour to experience it, Death Note: Killer Within shows great promise in delivering the intense cat-and-mouse gameplay that social deduction enthusiasts love, enhanced with a Death Note twist. However, we feel that the enjoyment of games like this often relies on players’ interactions and skills. Since our group was new, it was hard to fully assess the game’s potential.

Playing as Kira and his follower is generally more enjoyable due to their unique abilities that facilitate strategic manipulation. Additionally, the ability to pass the Death Note with your partner, creates opportunities for deception, allowing them to shift the game’s tide in their favor, even if they are caught.

On the other hand, if the Inspectors get killed, their deaths won’t be in vain, especially if L plays well. Due to that, the game requires careful thought and timing, particularly with the new mechanics that deepen the strategic elements. Like many games in this genre, it takes time to master the rules and understand the reasons behind players’ suspicions. While it’s hard to definitively say whether the game is a masterpiece just yet, it definitely shows promise. The iconic IP of Death Note adds an intriguing flair to the gameplay, ensuring a captivating experience for both fans and newcomers alike.
