Netflix expands its roster of films by critically acclaimed Studio Ghibli with its latest animated film ‘Earwig and the Witch’ which will be coming to Netflix this 18 November 2021.

Director Goro Miyazaki said:

The latest movie Earwig and the Witch tells the story of a headstrong, snarky young girl, who grew up in an orphanage, her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a stubborn witch.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki and with a planning by Hayao Miyazaki and screenplay by Keiko Niwa and Emi Gunji, the story of Earwig is based on a novel of the same name by English writer Diana Wynne Jones. The movie will be premiering on Netflix starting November 18.

Upon its release earlier this year, the film received a mixed to negative reception from fans and critics alike with many feeling the 3D animation did not suit the style of Ghibli and the plot was hard to follow. Nonetheless, for the Studio’s first attempt at 3D animation, many agreed it was an interesting experiment into what the studio can do with CGI as an art form and how it can be built upon in the future.

It will be joining classic Ghibli films like My Neighbour Totoro and Princess Mononoke which are currently already available on Netflix’s streaming service.
