With popular music bots having been shut down, the planned native integration of Discord and YouTube is now in its testing phase. According to The Verge, this integration feature is showing up as Watch Together in a number of Discord servers.
Unlike screen sharing, the feature is more specific to YouTube where Discord server members can create a playlist of videos on the video sharing platform by searching and / or pasting in links. There’s a remote button to allow other members for shared playback control too. It’s obviously not a one-to-one similarity to the music bots. In addition, the Watch Together feature comes with the warning that you may see ads as you watch the videos.
The ads can easily make up another revenue stream, something the music bots excised. For the time being, the feature looks to be gradually rolling out to small servers before it gets more widely available. The feature itself is planned to reach all users by the end of October. You can choose to opt in via Discord’s Game Labs server to try it out for yourself.
The inclusion of ads makes this integration sound somewhat like the non-Premium experience on services like Spotify, which also includes ads every now and again between tracks.
