Postknight has launched for a couple of days and it has archived a million of downloads. Few days ago, we are honored to have an interview with the founder of Kurechii (Postknight‘s developer), Yiwei P’ng.
About Kurechii and Postknight
When asked about how the name “Kurechii” came from, P’ng says it is derived from the words “creative” and “crazy“. The Kurechii team started to form back in 2009, brought together by some making of web browser based games. They joined the Malaysia Intellectual Property Creators Challenge (MIPCC) which came out their first ever game named Reachin’ Pichin. After that, their interest into game industry develops and continue to produce games.
Kurechii would try to make games that even looking at it will bring you joy rather than following the market’s trend blindly. They would make games by matching every team member’s skill set and strength, knowing what they can do and what they want to do.
He mentioned that Postknight was initially an experimental project, inspired by the on-the-go lifestyle he experienced during his trip to Tokyo. The game is designed in portrait mode with only short sessions for people to be able to play with only one hand while be able to put down the game and continue anytime.
Producing games for other genre or platforms and future plans
Kurechii did not really focus on any genre and will not limit themselves on a specific platforms. He shared that they will be focusing more on improving previous game titles in the following two years. Besides, they are now working on a series of game which could all share the same universe, and in multi-platform. They set their views on cross-platform multiplayer too, looking forward to it!
Challenges faced while creating a game
The team mainly struggle in performance optimizing as they do not want to overly downgrade any other aspect for presentation. They do spent lots of time to optimize graphics for better presentation.
Thoughts of game industry in Malaysia
They are happy to see the government supporting the industry and having MDEC to help those newbies who just stepped in the game industry. More events are held these few years, more game hub and game development studio is here which brings more job opportunity to the industry. The game industry is growing that people starts to see more potential thus being more likely to get into education. But sustaining and surviving in game industry is still a major challenge, Kurechii would like to make sure that their team can stay long enough to learn and grow.
Local game industry event vs events overseas
There is not much difference in both local and overseas events’ content, however our local player are not really aware of local made game. People often think them as a publisher who just bringing the game in instead of making games. Kurechii hopes that more people can be aware of local made game through those events held, which gives more motivation for people to join the industry.
Advice for those who would like to join game industry
P’ng shared with us that a right mindset is very important to join the industry. Don’t just simply make a game and hope for luck in local market. Instead, set your mind for the game to be push out into global market. Do not think too much on how to sell a game too, as people will come to look for it when your game is good enough. Lastly, finish up the game and put it on stores for people to play is the most important thing to do. You don’t learn only by applying your skill in making the game but you learn by completing it and getting feedback from players to improve.
