Ubisoft Barcelona has begun laying off 51 employees, with the cuts coming shortly after the release of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. QA/QC lead Isabel Codina García shared news of her departure on LinkedIn, writing that after seven years at the studio, “this is not how I imagined it would end.” She added that she remains grateful for the people she met and what she learned during her time there.
The layoffs were first revealed alongside the closures of Ubisoft’s Winnipeg and Belgrade studios, as part of a wider restructuring plan the company introduced earlier this year. In response to the announcement, Ubisoft Barcelona staff went on strike, organized by the Spanish union La Confederación General del Trabajo. The union called on Ubisoft to negotiate a new studio mandate that would keep the affected employees on staff, and asked for job protection guarantees to prevent additional layoffs for at least five years.

According to García, no further mandates will be given to the Barcelona studio, even though the team had proposed new Assassin’s Creed projects. Going forward, the studio will focus solely on the Rainbow Six franchise. Ubisoft has said this round of layoffs and closures will be the last as part of its cost cutting plan, which is aimed at saving 200 million euros. As part of the broader restructuring, the company also closed its Stockholm and Halifax studios, cancelled three new IPs, and scrapped its planned remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
