Capcom has announced that its upcoming action game Onimusha: Way of the Sword will now launch on September 4, moving up from its previously announced September 25 release date. The change means players will get their hands on the game three weeks sooner than originally planned. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes players through Edo-era Kyoto, a version of the historic Japanese capital that has been twisted by dangerous forces known as Malice. Each stage is designed to carry its own sense of mystery and threat. Players will fight against creatures from the underworld called Genma as part of a dark fantasy story centered on a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical weapon that gives him the power to defeat these enemies. As he fights his way through the game, the story follows his search for a reason to keep going.
The Onimusha series began in 2001 with a story about a young warrior living through a period of war in feudal Japan. In that first game, the hero gains the power of the Oni and becomes known as an Onimusha, fighting against the Genma who threaten to take over the world. The series became known for its “Issen” critical counter mechanic and its combat style, which have remained key features throughout the franchise. The games have also drawn attention for blending real historical figures and events with their supernatural storylines.

Beyond the main games, the series has expanded into other projects, including an original animated series on Netflix. Across its history, Onimusha has sold more than 8.7 million units worldwide. With the earlier release date now set, fans of the series will not have to wait as long to see how this next chapter unfolds.
