Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino has confirmed that PlayStation is not stepping back from live service games, even after a string of setbacks in the space.
Speaking to Famitsu, Nishino was asked whether Sony planned to keep pushing forward with live service titles. His answer was clear: “That’s right. With live-service games, it’s important to keep providing something on an ongoing basis. The genre itself is relatively new, and I imagine many people are trying out various approaches, so we intend to continue taking on new challenges within that context.”

Nishino also shared how Sony sees the broader value of these games: “We view live-service games as content that attracts users on a global scale, so we intend to continue revitalizing the market through both first-party and third-party content.” He added that Sony is thinking beyond just launching new titles, and is also looking at what can be done with older games over the medium to long term.
The comments come after a rough few years for PlayStation’s push into the live service space. Back in 2022, Sony announced plans to develop ten live service games. Since then, things have not gone smoothly. The most notable stumble was Concord, which launched in 2024 and was pulled from sale just two weeks after release. Several other live service projects were also canceled at studios including Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games, with Bluepoint being shut down entirely earlier this year.

Not everything has gone badly, though. Helldivers 2, made by Arrowhead Game Studios, turned out to be a major success, becoming PlayStation’s fastest-selling game of all time and moving over 15 million copies by the end of 2024. That result stands as proof that the model can work, and appears to be part of why Sony is holding its ground on the strategy despite the difficulties along the way.
