Insomniac Games just dropped a new gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine during the recent State of Play, and it comes packed with story details, combat mechanics, and the news that pre-orders are now open.
There are several interesting details we can take away from the gameplay. Wolverine’s agility is on full display, both when navigating the environment during exploration and when closing the distance to enemies from afar. The footage also shows how the difficulty of combat can increase quite dramatically depending on the type of enemy you are facing. In addition, this presentation confirmed the appearance of several other iconic characters alongside Mystique, namely Jean Grey and Sabretooth.
From the details shared, Marvel’s Wolverine’s combat system is centered around building Logan’s “Rage” state, represented by three large bars beneath the health bar. Every successful attack, parry, and kill contributes to filling these bars. Once Logan reaches Rage Level 3, he enters a berserk-like mode that allows him to instantly execute enemies.
Although you will only play as Wolverine, this gameplay presentation also briefly showed a segment in which he receives assistance from Jean and her powerful telekinetic abilities. This certainly opens up some exciting possibilities if the developers decide to apply similar mechanics to other characters as well, so hopefully there will be more segments like this that are not limited to his team-up with Jean. As an additional note, the developers also emphasized their commitment to accessibility, which is why the game has been designed to be comfortably playable for players with disabilities and other accessibility needs.

If you’re interested in the game, pre-orders are now officially available for both the Standard Edition and the Digital Deluxe Edition for Marvel’s Wolverine. For the Standard Edition, players will receive several bonuses, including early access to the Classic Brown Costume, early access to Reflective Claws, 1 additional Technique Point, and 4 PlayStation account avatars. The game is currently scheduled for release exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15.
