Subnautica 2 has already become one of the biggest PC launches of 2026 only hours after entering early access. The underwater survival sequel reached a peak of 467,582 concurrent players on Steam shortly after launch, surpassing the previous 2026 record held by Resident Evil Requiem.
The massive player count highlights the overwhelming anticipation surrounding the sequel, despite the ongoing controversy involving developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and parent company Krafton.
Subnautica 2 Sets New Steam Record for 2026

Subnautica 2 launched into early access on May 14 and immediately exploded in popularity on Steam. Within only a few hours, the game reached a peak concurrent player count of 467,582 users.
At the time of reporting, more than 456,000 players remained active in-game worldwide. The title also earned a “Very Positive” user rating on Steam, holding an 86 percent approval score across more than 1,200 English-language reviews.
This achievement places Subnautica 2 ahead of Resident Evil Requiem, which previously held the highest Steam peak for a 2026 release with 344,214 concurrent players during its February launch.
Subnautica 2 surpassed that number by more than 123,000 players. At the time of writing, there are currently 174,067 players playing right now with a peak of 467,582 concurrent players.
Early Access Success Despite Controversy

The game’s launch success arrives during a turbulent period for Unknown Worlds and Krafton. Recent reports surrounding management disputes between both companies generated significant discussion online ahead of release.
Following legal developments involving the reinstatement of Unknown Worlds leadership, fans noticed that Krafton’s publisher branding appeared to be removed from the game’s Steam and Xbox store listings.
Although Krafton still owns Unknown Worlds, neither company has clarified what this change could mean long term for Subnautica 2’s publishing arrangement.
Even so, the controversy does not appear to have slowed player interest.
Why Subnautica 2 Is Pulling Massive Numbers

Several factors likely contributed to the game’s explosive launch. The original Subnautica built a massive fanbase thanks to its blend of exploration, survival mechanics, and atmospheric underwater horror. Its follow-up, Subnautica: Below Zero, further expanded the franchise’s popularity.
Subnautica 2 also entered early access with strong visibility on Steam, where it became one of the platform’s most wishlisted games of 2026.
Additionally, the game launched at a relatively accessible $29.99 (89 MYR) price point while also being available through Xbox Game Pass for Xbox and PC players.
Early Access Roadmap Could Last Years

Unknown Worlds confirmed that Subnautica 2 will remain in early access for approximately two to three years. During that period, the team plans to gather community feedback while continuing to add new biomes, features, systems, and gameplay improvements.
The developers stated that player feedback will help shape the eventual Version 1.0 release.
As more content arrives over time, the big question now is whether Subnautica 2 can maintain its incredible record and momentum long after launch week.
Subnautica 2 Continues Its Massive Start

Subnautica 2 is now available in early access for PC and Xbox Series X|S through Steam, Xbox, and Xbox Game Pass. With nearly half a million concurrent players already diving in, the sequel has quickly established itself as one of the biggest gaming launches of 2026 so far.
