A senior PlayStation executive is expressing strong confidence in their upcoming games to the platform over the next several years, even as the broader industry continues to deal with layoffs and studio closures. Christian Svensson, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s VP of second and third-party content, shared his thoughts in an interview with The Game Business. His team works directly with developers building games for the PlayStation 5, giving him early access to information about titles that have yet to be announced publicly.
“I’m in an incredibly privileged position to have amazing visibility into what games will be for the next 3, 4, 5 years,” Svensson said. “Last year was an amazing year for games. This year will be even better. Next year will be better still. The trajectory of content is unbelievably positive. And we as an industry should be super optimistic about where we’re going in spite of the headwinds.”

Svensson acknowledged that challenges still exist, particularly around finding the right audience across a growing number of devices and player types. However, he said that the decisions being made now by developers and publishers are “very smart,” and that the results of those decisions will take time to show up since games can take years to complete.
“Obviously, the decisions we’re making now take into account where we are at this moment,” he said. “We’re anticipating where we’re going to be. There are no dire times for the industry ahead as far as I’m concerned. Be more comfortable than you think you should be.”

His comments come a few months after PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst delivered a less upbeat message. When announcing the closure of Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the Demon’s Souls remake, Hulst pointed to rising development costs, slower industry growth, shifting player habits, and economic pressures as factors making it harder for studios to operate sustainably.
“While I know this is hard news to hear, I’m confident in the direction we’re headed,” Hulst said at the time. “Creativity, innovation, and building unforgettable experiences for players remain at the heart of PlayStation Studios.”
