Japanese game developer Aquaplus has confirmed that the long-running Utawarerumono series will come to an end with its upcoming release, as the company plans to move forward with new intellectual properties.
Utawarerumono: Shiro e no Michishirube, the fifth mainline entry in the turn-based JRPG series, is set to launch on May 28 in Japan for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Switch 2. The game has been positioned as the series finale, following the original Utawarerumono trilogy and 2022’s Monochrome Mobius.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Aquaplus Chief Operating Officer Naoya Shimokawa, who also serves as composer and producer, clarified what this means for the franchise’s future. When asked whether the new title would simply wrap up the current story or mark a complete end to the series, Shimokawa stated that scenario writer Munemitsu Suga “will have told all the stories he wanted to tell” with this installment, making it “truly be the last installment.”
Shimokawa confirmed that aside from Utawarerumono: Lost Frag—the series’ ongoing mobile RPG available only in Japan—Aquaplus has no other Utawarerumono-related projects currently in development.
“We don’t know what might happen to Utawarerumono in the distant future, but for now, we intend to bring things to a close, and focus our efforts on Jasmine and the development of new IPs going forward,” Shimokawa explained.

Jasmine is an upcoming visual novel from Aquaplus that was originally announced in 2011 but cancelled in 2015. The project was revived in 2024 after nearly a decade. Details about the game remain limited, though the development team includes novelist Yuichi Suzumoto, known for his work on Clannad and Air, and character designer Hisashi Kawata, who has credits on To Heart, White Album, and several Utawarerumono titles.
Regarding Shiro e no Michishirube itself, Shimokawa expressed confidence that the finale will satisfy longtime fans of the series, describing it as “packed with information people are likely very curious about.” Utawarerumono: Shiro e no Michishirube releases May 28 in Japan for PC via Steam, PS5, and Switch 2.
