Nintendo has announced that Animal Crossing: New Horizons will receive a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, launching on January 15, 2026. The game will also get a major free update for players on both the original Switch and Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition will feature enhanced visuals with improved resolution and new controls using the Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse. Players can use these mouse controls to redecorate their homes, create custom designs, and write messages on the bulletin board.
New features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition include:
- A Megaphone item available at Nook’s Cranny, which uses the Switch 2’s microphone to call other island residents
- Support for up to 12 players in online multiplayer (compared to eight players on the standard version), though all players need the Switch 2 Edition
- Switch 2 Camera support that lets players display their faces next to their characters
Free Version 3.0 Update
A free update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be available for both Switch and Switch 2 versions, adding several new features:
The update introduces a new hotel on the pier, managed by Kapp’n’s family. The hotel brings visitors from off the island, and players can decorate guest rooms with different themes. The hotel’s souvenir shop will sell retro Nintendo products, including old toys like the Ultra Hand and Ultra Machine, plus classic consoles such as the Famicom, NES, Game Boy, and Super Famicom. Players with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription can play games on these retro consoles.
Home storage will increase with two additional upgrades, allowing players to store up to 9,000 items instead of the current limit of 5,000. A new dream location called Slumber Island will let players create and decorate up to three separate islands. They can invite other players to visit these islands without affecting their main island.
The update also adds collaboration content from several brands. Lego items will be available through Nook Shopping, including beds, workbenches, fireplaces, plants, sofas, tables, and outfits.
