iPhone 16 Pro Max, Apple’s flagship released in September 2024, attracted significant attention from the start. It introduced a dedicated Camera Control button for the first time, features a larger screen with slimmer bezels, and is among the first iPhones to support Apple Intelligence. These updates signal that it’s not just Apple’s “most powerful flagship,” but also a key milestone for the company’s future in imaging and AI.

Design
Since the iPhone 12 series, the “square-edged, large-screen” design has been a hallmark of the Pro Max models. The iPhone 16 Pro Max continues with a titanium frame, weighing 227g, slightly heavier than the previous generation. However, compared with older stainless-steel models like the 14 Pro Max (240g), it still feels relatively lightweight.

The back feels smooth and resists fingerprints. The phone features a 6.9-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, wider than the previous 6.7-inch screen with narrower bezels for a more immersive viewing experience.

The screen supports ProMotion 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, making scrolling smooth — perfect for social media or gaming. It also supports P3 wide color gamut and True Tone for natural color reproduction, with peak brightness up to 2,000 nits, clearly visible even in bright sunlight.
However, the larger 6.9-inch display makes one-handed use more challenging. Measuring 163mm x 77.6mm, smaller-handed users may find typing or operating the phone single-handedly more difficult.

Performance
iPhone 16 Pro Max is powered by the A18 Pro chip built on a 3nm process, offering significant performance improvements. In daily use — whether for social media, multitasking, web browsing, or demanding apps like video editing and photo retouching — the device runs smoothly.
In gaming, titles such as Wuthering Waves, Honkai: Star Rail, and Resident Evil 4 run exceptionally well at high graphics settings, with stable frame rates and virtually no stuttering.
For example, in Wuthering Waves, playing at graphics-priority mode with 60FPS, while Bluetooth and GPS are enabled, consumes about 14% battery over half an hour, yet gameplay remains smooth even during intensive combat sequences.

In Honkai: Star Rail, with Bluetooth and GPS on, running at high graphics + 120FPS for around 1 hour 20 minutes drained the battery from 74% to 40%, all while maintaining flawless performance.

For the console-port AAA game Resident Evil 4, about 20 minutes of gameplay used roughly 7% battery, with stable loading times and frame rates throughout.

Additionally, iPhone 16 Pro Max supports a game mode that minimizes background activity, providing more stable frame rates and smoother gameplay. This mode also significantly reduces latency for wireless controllers and AirPods, making controls more responsive and the overall experience smoother.
Regarding heat, after roughly 10 minutes of gameplay, the area around the camera module tends to warm up, but the screen stays cool, so gaming performance is generally unaffected. The device also cools down quickly once the game is exited.

Audio and Battery
In addition to its excellent display, iPhone 16 Pro Max continues to deliver solid performance with its stereo speakers, supporting spatial audio with a wide, layered soundstage. Watching shows or playing games remains an enjoyable auditory experience.
The charging port switched to USB-C starting from the iPhone 15 series, and the 16 series also does not include a 3.5mm headphone jack. The box includes a USB-C to USB-C cable but no charging adapter. It is recommended to have a durable USB-A to USB-C cable as a backup for everyday convenience.
iPhone 16 Pro Max supports 30W wired fast charging. While this is considered “fast” within Apple’s ecosystem, it is moderate compared to current Android flagships offering 80W or 120W charging. In testing with a 20W charger, charging from 44% to 86% took approximately 43 minutes. Although not very fast, it is sufficient for daily use. Wireless charging supports up to 25W via MagSafe and up to 15W via Qi2 and Qi.

The battery capacity has been slightly increased to 4,685mAh, 240mAh more than the previous generation. Thanks to the energy efficiency optimizations of the A18 Pro chip and iOS system management, real-world performance is excellent.
For typical moderate use — social media, photography, and video streaming — the battery can last a full day, requiring recharge by evening or the next morning. For heavy use — navigation, gaming, filming, or short video browsing — a daily charge is necessary. For example, during a 4-hour event of continuous photo and video shooting, the battery dropped from over 90% to around 20%, so carrying a power bank is advisable. Since charging speed isn’t very fast, it can be critical in urgent situations.
Apple Intelligence
With the rapid development of AI, Apple officially unveiled its generative AI system, Apple Intelligence, at WWDC 2024, planning to bring a range of AI features to iPhone, iPad, and Mac through iOS 18.
Apple Intelligence supports functions such as smart email writing, intelligent summaries, image generation, and AI object removal. These features are only available on devices with A17 Pro, A18, A18 Pro, or M-series chips, meaning the iPhone 16 series is currently one of the few “AI-ready” iPhones.
The most frequently used features are notification summaries and the built-in ChatGPT writing tool, which are convenient for composing emails or taking notes. However, not all apps currently support the writing tool. Testing shows that supported third-party apps include WeChat, LINE, and X, while WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are not yet compatible. Additionally, using AI features tends to heat up the phone quickly and noticeably increases battery consumption.

Although the current experience still feels somewhat “unfinished,” based on Apple’s usual development pace, once the system functions stabilize, AI is expected to become an important part of the iPhone experience. Personally, the most anticipated feature is a smarter, more intuitive Siri.

Therefore, if you purchase the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a “prepare the hardware first” mindset, it is a strategic move for the future. Once Apple Intelligence is fully launched, you will be among the first to experience it.
Camera System
iPhone 16 Pro Max is equipped with a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto lens supporting 5x optical zoom. The main and telephoto lenses have seen little hardware change, maintaining high image quality overall, while the upgraded ultra-wide lens enhances detail clarity and practical usability.
The main camera excels at capturing details, whether shooting landscapes in daylight or portraits indoors. Dynamic range and sharpness are impressive. Apple’s imaging style leans toward realism, aiming to reproduce natural lighting and colors. In cloudy or low-light conditions, images may appear slightly grayish or yellowish. However, for general users, it’s still easy to take good photos casually.
For more vivid or visually striking results, post-processing or third-party camera apps are almost necessary.
Regarding the 5x optical zoom, its practical use is somewhat limited. By contrast, the previous 3x telephoto zoom was better suited for everyday use, especially for portraits or indoor close-ups, as the framing distance is more manageable. The 5x telephoto is mostly useful for viewing distant menus, stages, or landscapes, and in practice, it is used less frequently.
Video recording remains one of Apple’s strengths, offering stable handheld footage with colors close to real-life without over-processing. Overall, it still outperforms most Android devices. As for spatial video, to be honest, even after six months of testing, it has rarely been used.
For selfies, the 12MP front camera delivers realistic results as usual, capturing even small facial imperfections faithfully.
Camera Control Button
iPhone 16 Pro series introduces a new physical Camera Control button located below the power button, designed to provide a “camera-like” operation experience. Pressing it takes a photo, holding it records video, and swiping allows zoom adjustments. While this sounds convenient, in practice it feels somewhat redundant.

First, although the button currently supports object recognition (similar to Google Lens), it can lag when the background is complex or cluttered, affecting smooth usage.

Second, tapping the on-screen shutter button is generally more convenient than using the physical button. With a case on, swiping can easily result in accidental touches, and pressing the button to take a photo requires more force, making the experience less smooth.

It’s not unusable, but truly more of an optional feature. It seems to be an experimental way to explore new camera interactions, but for most users, it doesn’t fundamentally change their usage habits.
Buying Advice
If you’re using an iPhone 14 or earlier, especially a non-Pro model, and have a limited budget, the upgrades on iPhone 16 Pro Max or Pro are quite noticeable (aside from size, both models share the same specifications). It’s worth considering, and there are still plenty of discounts available.

For users of 15 Pro series, upgrading may not make much sense, as changes in camera, performance, or design are mostly minor tweaks.
If you’re planning to get a new device with a sufficient budget, or are switching from Android to Apple, it might be worth waiting for iPhone 17 series launching September 2025. As the saying goes, “buy new, not old” — you can see if there are bigger upgrades, such as faster charging, camera improvements, or enhanced AI features, before making your decision.
Verdict
iPhone 16 Pro Max is a reliable flagship that offers smooth performance, long-lasting battery life, and a premium overall experience. It’s perfect for users who prioritize performance, ecosystem, camera quality, and long-term usability over flashy yearly upgrades.

When it comes to gaming, virtually any App Store game — including console-port AAA titles like Death Stranding or the Resident Evil series — runs effortlessly, maintaining consistent smoothness and stability over time.
If, like me, you value a dependable everyday experience rather than chasing the thrill of upgrading every year, iPhone 16 Pro Max is a reassuring choice.
