Congrats to Final Fantasy (FF) Tactics as it celebrates its 27th anniversary as of today. Have you ever wondered what the original plan was for the game? Well, to celebrate, Director Yasumi Matsuno shared some of the early development images before its official release in 1997.

To translate the post, Matsuno said “Congratulations on the 27th anniversary of the release of “Final Fantasy Tactics”! I’ll upload a sample image of the “FFT initial plan” that was revealed during the FFT live broadcast six years ago.”
“This is a sample image from early 1996. We had hoped to continue development with the aim of creating an RTS like “Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen,” but unfortunately this was scrapped, and the game ended up being released in the form it is today. The strong jaggedness is due to the PlayStation’s resolution at the time being 256×224.”
And as you can see from the images, it looks vastly different to today’s FF Tactics. Both look good in their own retrospect. FF Tactics was later remade for the PSP as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions. Congratulations once again to FF Tactics for reaching its 27th anniversary.
