Local Malaysian cinemas have confirmed that the movie Black Panther Wakanda Forever has been approved by the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia.
This is significant as it was speculated by Malaysian cinemagoers that the film may not be released in cinemas as it was rumored to feature a lesbian main character. The Disney films Lightyear and Thor: Love and Thunder were not released in Malaysia for similar reasons (both films have since been released in the country on Disney Plus).
Both Golden Screen Cinemas and TGV Cinemas however have posted on their social media accounts saying that the movie has been approved and will be screened in local cinemas. Tickets will be available for purchase on Friday the 4th of November.
Black Panther Wakanda Forever is the sequel to the 2018 movie Black Panther. Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played King T’Challa/Black Panther unfortunately passed away in 2020. With respect to Boseman, Disney said that they would not recast the character but rather the sequel will see the kingdom of Wakanda struggling with the death of the Black Panther in-universe.
In this time of mourning, Wakanda is attacked by another kingdom from beneath the waves: the nation of Talokan, led by King Namor The Sub-Mariner. Namor is a classic Marvel anti-hero who is known for playing either hero or villain depending on what story he’s in. He’s also been heavily connected to both the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in the comics, perhaps implying that deeper connections to both franchises will be coming to the MCU.
The film will be the final entry into Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which includes films like Spider-Man No Way Home as well as Disney Plus TV Series like Moon Knight.
Black Panther Wakanda Forever will premier in Malaysia on the 10th of November
