Tales of ARISE was originally one of the major JRPG releases that skipped the Nintendo Switch. Now, Bandai Namco Entertainment has brought the game to Nintendo Switch 2 in the form of Tales of ARISE – Beyond the Dawn Edition.
For this review, we tested the game directly on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. As such, the focus is primarily on technical performance rather than story or gameplay systems. For a full breakdown of the base game and expansion content, you can refer to our previous review here.

The key question is simple: does this version finally deliver a smooth and comfortable portable way to experience Tales of ARISE?
A Quick Look at the Story

Tales of ARISE is set across two worlds, Dahna and Rena. For over 300 years, Rena has ruled over Dahna using advanced technology and military power. The planet is divided into multiple regions governed by Renan Lords, each competing for control of the Master Core and the title of Sovereign.
The story follows Alphen, a masked slave who has lost his memories and cannot feel pain. He eventually meets Shionne, a Renan woman cursed with thorns that harm anyone who touches her.

Together with allies such as Rinwell, Law, Kisara, Dohalim, and the Crimson Crows, they rise against the Lords in a rebellion to free Dahna.
While the premise is relatively familiar for JRPG standards, the strength of Tales of ARISE lies in its character writing. Party interactions through Skits and cutscenes give the journey emotional weight. The relationship between Alphen and Shionne acts as the emotional core of the story.

As the narrative progresses, the conflict expands into a much larger mystery surrounding the connection between Dahna and Rena.
Beyond the Dawn takes place one year after the base game’s ending. Although the two worlds are united, peace remains unstable. Racial tension, environmental issues, and emotional scars still linger.

During reconstruction efforts, the party meets Nazamil, a young girl descended from a Renan Lord who is rejected by society from all sides.
Compared to the base game, Beyond the Dawn takes a more personal approach. It acts as an emotional epilogue focused on healing, acceptance, and rebuilding trust rather than large-scale conflict.
Testing Setup on Nintendo Switch 2

Because the Nintendo Switch 2 supports both docked and handheld play, testing was conducted in both modes.
In docked mode, the game was played on a 1440p monitor. In handheld mode, testing was done on the system’s built-in display.

There are no graphical options such as Performance or Quality modes. Unlike PlayStation 5 or PC versions, players cannot adjust frame rate targets or visual fidelity. The only available setting is brightness.
Testing covered multiple hours across both the main game and Beyond the Dawn content, including exploration, combat, and city environments.
Visuals and Performance

Overall, Tales of ARISE – Beyond the Dawn Edition performs better than expected on Nintendo Switch 2.
The game benefits heavily from its strong anime-style art direction, which scales well to portable hardware. Loading times are fast, and transitions into combat are smooth enough to maintain immersion.

Character models remain sharp, and environments retain a high level of detail. Combat effects are still visually impressive, and the game never feels like a heavily downgraded version.
Non-pre-rendered cutscenes appear to run at 60FPS in 1080p during handheld play, which gives certain moments a noticeably smoother presentation.
However, this performance boost is limited to cutscenes only.
Actual gameplay, including exploration and combat, is locked at 30FPS in both docked and handheld modes. Frame pacing is stable, and major drops were rare even during visually intense fights.
The 30FPS cap does not break the experience. Combat still feels responsive and readable. However, it does feel restrictive for an action-focused RPG, especially on new hardware.
The contrast with 60FPS cutscenes makes this limitation more noticeable. Even a mid-range option like 45FPS could have improved overall fluidity.
Minor Technical Issues

There are a few small issues worth noting.
Shadow pop-in is occasionally visible in crowded city areas. This appears more frequently in Beyond the Dawn content, though it is not constant enough to be distracting.
Distant environments generally hold up well and maintain good visual cohesion.
Skits are less polished visually compared to gameplay. The comic-style panels appear softer and lower in resolution, with jagged edges visible in character details such as hair.
These issues are minor, but they stand out due to how clean the rest of the presentation is.
Features and Accessibility

The Nintendo Switch 2 version includes basic customization options. Players can remap controls, adjust camera sensitivity, and change difficulty at any time.
However, vibration feedback feels underutilized. Strong rumble is mostly limited to specific cutscenes, while combat interactions do not consistently translate into meaningful haptic feedback.
It is not a major flaw, but it does reduce immersion slightly during battles.
Verdict

Tales of ARISE – Beyond the Dawn Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 is a strong and reliable portable port.
The game retains its visual identity, runs smoothly in most situations, and benefits from fast loading times. Most importantly, it never feels like a heavily compromised version of the original release.
However, the lack of performance options is a clear missed opportunity. The Nintendo Switch 2 appears capable of more, especially given that cutscenes already run at 60FPS.
Minor issues like shadow pop-in and lower-resolution Skits also prevent the port from feeling fully refined.
Even so, the overall experience remains highly enjoyable. This is still one of the best ways to play Tales of ARISE in handheld form.
