For a sequel so largely anticipated, Grand Theft Auto VI has kept itself pretty much under wraps since its first trailer in December 2023, until today. The much-awaited GTA VI Netflix preview showcased over 25 minutes of cutscenes and gameplay, all captured on the base PS5. It provided us with tons of new details, both gameplay- and story-wise, and we’re here to dissect them all.

Red Dead Redemption 2 DNA
The first sign of RDR 2’s influence on GTA VI appears when Jason interacts with a dog, triggering a small emoji and chime sound effect on the right side of the screen, similar to the honor system in Rockstar’s previous game.

Apparently, this is the game’s new “criminal profile”, which can be affected positively or negatively by certain actions made by the player, such as feeding animals and beating up an NPC. It serves as another layer on top of the staple wanted stars of the GTA series.
Speaking of NPCs, interacting with them feels and looks like how Arthur/John would in RDR 2, with the option to greet or antagonize them. Furthermore, they’re noticeably more dynamic compared to previous GTA games, with one instance seeing Lucia be pressed aggressively by an NPC during a jewel store robbery.
Jason Has A Dead Eye-Type Ability

Piggybacking off the previous point, a section also showcased the game’s revamped combat mechanics, among which is Jason’s seemingly similar ability to RDR 2’s Dead Eye. In a brief moment at the end, Jason was seen slowing down time while aiming at his enemies and even revealing vital organs, much like Arthur was in the Wild West.
Furthermore, the combat seems to feature more cinematic elements akin to RDR 2, with instances showing slowed-down kills of enemies.
RPG Elements Are Back

Rockstar is also bringing back RPG elements, something that was also previously present in RDR 2, or more aptly, GTA San Andreas. For instance, Jason and Lucia can eat and work out in this game, with the showcase providing a quick glimpse of Lucia bench pressing in the gym.
Having home bases also seems to return. In one segment, the duo was seen chilling in their shared home, with a fridge filled with booze and snacks, a TV, decorations, and clothes.
A section of the reveal also showed Lucia going through a shooting course, which may suggest that their respective stats could be improved by doing certain activities.
Bonnie and Clyde

One of the most common comparisons that players are making with Jason and Lucia is the real-life Bonnie and Clyde, a couple notoriously known for committing robberies and murders during the great depression.
The extended look further leaned into the duo’s relationship throughout the trailer, seemingly as a couple, as they hold hands and help choose outfits. However, Rockstar confirmed through IGN that players can easily opt out of the duo’s romance and play them as strictly platonic friends.
With the game featuring several protagonists like in GTA V, seamless switching is also making a comeback. The preview demonstrated this by showing Lucia skydiving before seamlessly switching to Jason driving a car.
Tons of Extracurricular Activities

One of the franchise’s strongest points is the inclusion of extracurricular activities players can do when they don’t feel like taking main and side missions. In a quick montage section of the trailer, the characters were seen racing dirt bikes, playing basketball, skydiving, boating through a bayou, kayaking, and, of course, going to the strip club.
Revamped Wanted Levels

During the police chase segment of the trailer, the HUD showed four out of six stars shaded in white. The return of a six-star wanted level hasn’t seen the light of day since GTA: Chinatown Wars, and it’s notoriously known for being ridiculously hard to get rid of, often involving a military battalion on the player’s tail.
Also shown in the HUD during the chase were four icons, signifying what the police have identified the players with already. At one point in the chase, the characters ditched a car that was already marked by the police, and upon switching into another vehicle, the icon representing it on the top right disappeared.
One of the icons also depicted a clothing hanger, suggesting that players can also alter their appearance to help get rid of the police.
