Hollywood actor Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Barbie) took to X on August 16 and finally provided updates regarding the much-anticipated Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation. 

Liu addressed the fans of the 2012 crime open-world game, stating that the project is ‘moving along really well.’ The actor proceeded to say that the project has already secured a director, a production company, and a ‘REAL’ path forward.

The last update regarding the project was in July, stating that he was hoping to post some really positive updates soon. This tweet was an answer to a fan who told Liu to do the Sleeping Dogs movie justice.

Liu’s tweet immediately brought back hope to the people who wanted to see the tight combat and Hong Kong crime drama of Sleeping Dogs in a Hollywood project. The tweet also came after a long radio silence regarding the project after Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto was attached to direct the film.

Fans are hyped for the project, given the passion shown by the people involved in the film. Director Tjahjanto once stated that ‘This will take time, but we’ll make the best version out of it.’

Furthermore, Simu Liu seems to have a strong connection with the game. Liu famously picked up the project in early 2025 after an initial 2017 film with Donnie Yen attached was cancelled. In February, Liu was reportedly interested in both producing and starring in the Sleeping Dogs movie.

The road to a Sleeping Dogs movie has been a long one, and there are still several details yet to be reported. With Liu’s latest tweet, however, it seems like the project is picking up steam to hopefully create a faithful movie adaptation of the cult classic game.
