Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush was asked about the possibility of a Kingdom Hearts movie during an interview with IGN at D23, and he didn’t shut the door on it. When asked if fans could ever get a Kingdom Hearts film, Bush gave a careful but open answer. He said he’s always glad to hear what people are passionate about, and that Disney has new projects coming with different ways of bringing material to audiences. He summed it up by saying “nothing is impossible.”
The talk of a possible movie followed news that fans were already excited about heading into the weekend. Footage from Kingdom Hearts IV was shown at D23, giving a look at Sora returning to fight the Heartless, this time in a world based on the movie Coco.
The question comes at a time when Kingdom Hearts is getting more attention from Disney than usual. The franchise has passed $1 billion in retail revenue, and Disney has publicly called it one of its billion-dollar franchises. On top of that, an anime series based on Kingdom Hearts was just announced for Disney+, though no release date has been set yet. For now, there’s no confirmed plan for a Kingdom Hearts movie, but Bush’s comments leave the door open as Disney continues to expand the franchise across games, television, and other formats.
