SEGA just announced that Sonic Frontiers, released in 2022, has surpassed five million sales across PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

The Blue Blur’s open-world debut was met with worldwide support, prompting SEGA to continuously expand the game’s content with major free updates and DLCs. Also, Frontiers has since earned numerous awards, including the Japan Game Awards 2023 Excellence Award.

With its latest five million milestone, SEGA decided to celebrate by holding a multi-platform digital sale, where players can pick up Sonic Frontiers at 65% off. The sale also features other favorites from the long-running franchise, such as SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds.

Also, to commemorate the monumental milestone, SEGA will reward its loyal player base with a limited-edition cosmetic of Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes for the iconic hedgehog.

SEGA also revealed that Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition, which is available digitally on the Nintendo Switch 2, is slated for a physical release on September 17. The definitive edition features all three major content updates and the Digital Deluxe bonuses, including the digital artbook and the official mini soundtrack.

Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition also has new modes, costumes, and new story content featuring the franchise’s beloved characters, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy.

Despite the controversial initial gameplay reveal of Sonic Frontiers, it seems that SEGA has struck gold with the 2022 game. What was once criticized for its empty open-world design and rough-looking gameplay has become one of the franchise’s biggest modern successes.
