Square Enix has confirmed how Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age will run on the Nintendo Switch 2. According to the game’s official website, players will be able to choose between two display modes. The first is called Performance Priority Mode, which runs the game at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. The second is Image Quality Priority Mode, which runs at 1440p resolution but at 30 frames per second. Square Enix has not said whether these numbers apply only when the console is docked or if they also apply in handheld mode.
Dragon Quest XI S follows the Luminary, a hero who takes on the task of saving the world of Erdrea. After being labeled a threat by the kingdom of Heliodor, he sets out to learn the truth about his past, his part in the fate of the world, and the secrets tied to the ancient danger known as the Dark One.
This version of the game brings back some features first introduced in the original Switch release. It includes a 2D mode that lets players switch to a retro look similar to older Dragon Quest games. It also has extended story sections for each party member, giving players more background on the characters traveling with the Luminary. The soundtrack has been redone as well, moving from the synthesized music used in the original release to a fully orchestrated score. Other changes include quicker battle speed, a photo mode, and more accessibility options for players.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is already available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PC through Steam. With the Switch 2 release on the way, players will soon have another way to experience the game with a choice between smoother performance or sharper visuals.
