Hideo Kojima has spoken out about Sony’s plan to stop making physical PlayStation discs, saying he feels “really sad” about the change but is even more worried about what could happen if game streaming becomes the main way people play in the future.
The Death Stranding and Metal Gear creator shared his thoughts at the “Il Cinema in Piazza” Film Festival in Italy. His comments were translated and shared online by Genki. Kojima explained that he grew up with physical media like discs, so news that PlayStation will stop making games on disc from 2028 struck a personal chord. He mentioned that he has recently been collecting Blu-rays and CDs, including various movies.
Hideo Kojima on the end of physical disc production for video games:
“Since production is ending in 2028, this is about video games, but I grew up with physical media, so I find it really sad. Currently, I’ve been buying up a lot of Blu-rays, such as various movies, and CDs too.… pic.twitter.com/ivL989gOFd

Kojima pointed out that digital games are different from streaming because when a game is downloaded, its data stays on the player’s own hardware. He said this would change if the industry moves toward streaming games directly from a server, similar to how services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video work for movies. With those platforms, users do not download and keep the data. Instead, they pay a monthly fee for access, and the content is delivered to them through what he described as a metaphorical “tap.”
He explained that this setup means people don’t truly own the content they are watching or playing. Kojima said this worries him because changes in politics, national decisions, or company choices could lead to that access being cut off entirely. If that happened, people would no longer be able to play the games or watch the movies they enjoy, even though they had been paying for access. He said this concern applies not just to games but to movies as well, and encouraged people to keep that in mind going forward.

For now, Sony has not addressed Kojima’s comments directly, and it remains to be seen how publishers and players will adapt as the shift away from physical media continues.
