Sony has told game developers and publishers that they will still be able to order physical discs for older PlayStation games even after the company stops making new disc titles in January 2028, according to a new report. Earlier this week, Sony announced it will stop manufacturing physical game discs starting in January 2028. This means developers won’t be able to release brand new games on disc after that date. At the time, Sony said the shift to digital would not affect games that were already released on disc before the cutoff.
Now, according to Game File, a separate message sent to developers and publishers through Sony’s private developer portal has given more detail on what that actually means. In the message, Sony said publishers “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games.” In simple terms, this means a PS5 game that came out in 2027 or earlier can still get new disc copies printed even after January 2028.

Sony also told partners that the process for ordering these discs will change in some ways that haven’t been announced yet. On top of that, the company said it plans to “provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes,” though further details on this haven’t been shared. This could mean physical game boxes that include a code to download the game rather than a disc, similar to what’s been reported for GTA 6’s upcoming physical release.
This update comes shortly after a separate report revealed that Sony’s largest disc manufacturing site is already preparing for the change. Dietmar Tanzer, CEO of DADC, the company that makes Sony’s optical media including PlayStation games, Blu-rays and CDs, said the plant’s 300 employees were told this week that the site will be restructured because of Sony’s decision to move away from discs. Sony has reportedly been planning for this shift for a while, having already put around €30 million into new equipment that will be used to make optical microlenses instead of game discs.
