Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced it will stop physical game disc production for new PlayStation titles starting January 2028. The company shared the news in a post on the official PlayStation Blog. According to the announcement, any new game releasing after that date will only be available in digital form, whether purchased through the PlayStation Store or from retailers. Games that come out before January 2028 in disc format will not be affected by this change.
Sid Shuman, senior director of content communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the move reflects how people are choosing to buy and play games today. He explained that digital media has become far more popular than physical discs, and the shift allows the company to better match what most players now prefer.

Shuman also said Sony plans to keep putting resources into improving how players can access games, while still giving them a choice of where to buy new titles, whether at stores or through the PlayStation Store. He added that the company remains focused on providing a strong gaming experience and thanked players for their continued support.
With this change in disc production, PlayStation will join the wider shift across the entertainment industry toward digital distribution. Sony has not shared further details beyond what was included in the blog post, but the January 2028 cutoff gives players and retailers more than a year to prepare for the shift away from physical game releases.
