Square Enix has officially launched a new version of the original Final Fantasy VII for PC via Steam and GOG. The updated release is now available for RM29.99, offering both longtime fans and newcomers a modernized way to experience one of the most influential JRPGs ever created.
Players who already own Final Fantasy VII on Steam will receive this upgraded version at no additional cost. The previous release will remain accessible under the title Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition, although it is no longer available for new purchases. It is important to note that save data between the 2013 Edition and the new version is not compatible.

A Timeless Story Returns

Originally released in 1997, Final Fantasy VII remains a landmark title in the role-playing genre. The story unfolds in the dystopian city of Midgar, where the Shinra Electric Power Company controls the world’s life force through Mako energy extraction. A resistance group known as Avalanche rises against Shinra’s corporate dominance.

Players step into the role of Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER operative turned mercenary, who joins Avalanche’s fight. What begins as a paid job soon escalates into a sweeping conflict that threatens the entire planet. Along the way, Cloud must confront the mysteries of his fractured past. This new PC release preserves the original narrative entirely, with no changes or additions to the story content.
Enhanced Features for Modern Players

While the core experience remains faithful to the original, this upgraded PC version introduces several quality-of-life improvements designed to make gameplay more accessible.
One of the most notable additions is the 3x Speed Mode, allowing players to accelerate gameplay during battles, travel, and select events. This feature significantly reduces grind time while maintaining the integrity of the experience.

The ability to turn off random battle encounters has also been implemented. Players can disable standard field encounters to streamline exploration, though mandatory story battles remain intact to preserve progression.
Additionally, a Battle Enhancement Mode enables HP and MP recovery during combat while maximizing the Limit gauge, offering a more forgiving approach for those who want to focus on story progression.

An autosave feature has also been added, bringing the classic JRPG in line with modern expectations for convenience and accessibility.
A Definitive PC Option

For both veterans revisiting Midgar and newcomers discovering it for the first time, this updated PC version of Final Fantasy VII offers a refined way to experience a genre-defining classic. At RM29.99, it presents an accessible entry point into one of gaming’s most celebrated titles while maintaining the integrity of the original adventure.
