Sony Raises PlayStation 5 Prices in the U.S., Effective August 21

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a price hike for all PlayStation 5 models in the United States, citing the current “challenging economic environment.”

Starting August 21, 2025, every PS5 console will see a $50 increase in its recommended retail price.

The updated PlayStation 5 prices in the US are as follows:

• PlayStation 5 – $549.99 (previously $499.99)
• PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 (previously $449.99)
• PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 (previously $699.99)

Sony confirmed that PS5 accessories remain at their current prices, and no other regions are affected at this time.

Why the PS5 Price Is Going Up

According to Isabelle Tomatis, VP of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the decision reflects the company’s need to adapt to ongoing global economic pressures. While not mentioning tariffs directly, the move comes months after Sony noted possible financial impacts from U.S. import taxes on hardware manufactured in China.

This adjustment follows similar moves by competitors. Microsoft recently raised prices on Xbox hardware, while Nintendo increased costs for accessories and even the original Switch ahead of the Switch 2 launch.

Global Context

This isn’t the first time Sony has raised PlayStation 5 prices. In April, the company announced price hikes across Europe, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. At the time, Sony suggested the U.S. would be evaluated separately, with stockpiles of consoles initially keeping prices stable. That buffer appears to have run out, prompting this latest update.

Despite the higher prices, Sony assured fans that it remains committed to delivering strong hardware and gaming experiences. Accessories like the DualSense controller and PlayStation Portal will stay at their current retail pricing.

The PS5’s new pricing reflects the broader challenges facing the gaming industry worldwide. While disappointing for players looking to buy a console soon, it keeps Sony in line with industry trends set by its rivals.
