Elon Musk’s xAI has rolled out a new feature for its chatbot Grok—AI companions—beginning with a goth anime girl and a quirky red fox. Free users can try the new companions with limitations while “Super Grok” subscribers on iOS can unlock more advanced features for $30/month, the update adds a new layer of personalization and character to the chatbot experience.

As announced by Elon Musk on X, the feature introduces at least two characters: Ani, a stylized anime girl in a gothic outfit, and Bad Rudy, a 3D red fox companion. Musk described the update as “pretty cool,” posting a preview image of Ani complete with blonde pigtails and fishnets, suggesting a playful approach to user interaction.
While exact functions of the companions haven’t been fully detailed, they appear to offer more than just visual flair. Users may engage with different personalities or interactive styles, though it’s currently unclear whether these are meant for roleplay, utility, or simply entertainment.
Ani’s design has drawn attention for its striking similarity to Misa Amane from Death Note. Some have jokingly suggested that she looks like an unofficial, copyright-safe take on the iconic character. With her gothic outfit and flowing blonde hair, the resemblance is something anime fans are quick to notice.

An intimacy system is also introduced that evolves based on how users interact with their AI companion. As intimacy levels rise, Ani’s dialogue becomes more personal, and at Level 3 and above, users can prompt outfit changes—including access to sexier attire.
Grok’s new companions come at a time when AI customization and avatar-driven experiences are becoming increasingly popular. Platforms like Character.AI have introduced similar personality-based chatbots, prompting broader conversations about AI as a tool for companionship and expression.
Studies have explored the impact of emotionally engaging with AI, with researchers noting both the potential benefits and areas to observe as the technology matures. For some, these avatars offer lighthearted interaction and personalization. For others, they raise questions about how AI personalities might influence everyday user experiences.

As early testers share clips and conversations—ranging from Ani’s stylized voice lines to Rudy’s offbeat humor—the feature is already gaining attention online. It’s another sign that AI developers are experimenting not only with intelligence, but also with tone, aesthetic, and emotional presence.
Free users can try out the Grok 3 AI chatbot with limitations such as message caps while Grok 4 is available in two paid tiers. Whether these digital personas become core parts of future AI design or remain niche novelties, their introduction marks an intriguing step in the evolution of personality-driven AI.
