It’s been about a day since Makima made her debut in NIKKE: Goddess of Victory, in an event that brings her and two other Chainsaw Man characters on to the roster of the mobile game.
For context, Makima is easily one of the most popular characters out of Chainsaw Man, alongside fellow heroine Power. While the reasons people like Power tend to vary, Makima fans are weirdly consistent- they like her 9-to-5 visuals against her domme personality, usually with a side of tenderness.
It’s that baby’s firsts S&M thing that’s increasingly popular in anime- they like the imagery of Makima holding a leash on you, but also without ever going full CBT or whips out on you, instead replacing it with generic oneesan tropes.
However, her debut in NIKKE seems to have left much to be desired- we’d previously reported that fans were upset that she’d been made to wear her long coat in the game, covering up any chance of seeing her jiggle to the laughably extreme recoil of the game’s weaponry.
Now that she’s out, the situation appears to have gotten a little more dire- she’s incredibly light on voicelines, with one of her two home screen lines being little more than a disinterested grunt. The audacity! People wanted headpats and lap pillows and what they got was the same response that one nice girl in the class gives when you mistakenly assume you’re friends because she pity-invited you out one time.
What gives?
Makima Was Always Kind Of An Ass
The truth is anyone who’d made a contract with the Reading Comprehension Devil might actually realize this is actually the most clever depiction of Fujimoto’s fetish incarnate yet. When you’re reading Chainsaw Man, you observe the world from the perspective of Denji. Denji, unlike the player, is special. As a result, Makima puts on her whole facade of being warm and welcoming- because it’s what keeps Denji around.
Unfortunately, the Commander in NIKKE is only special to cyborg girls. Organizationally, you’re just another grunt, and that’s how Makima treats you. She couldn’t care less about what you’re up to, and is off in her own head as she probably fantasizes about adopting more dogs or other things that would be spoilers to reveal.
Many fans have complained about her depiction in the game as a result of this- every Nikke is programmed to fawn over you incessantly, commenting on you being the strongest, kindest, most special commander to walk the Ark. As what’s technically a Nikke by game standards, Makima fails since her dialogue barely shows she understands what’s going on in the game. But as a depiction of Makima? She’s spot on. She has no care about anything not directly related to her interests, even if it’s interdimensional travel.
It’s a neat thing to do to buck fanservice trends in games, especially with a collab character. She could easily have just referenced any of her anime quotes, like randomly telling you that she needs dogs that don’t say no or having a Burst animation that features her crushing people into paste. Instead what we got in the game was a third-person perspective of just how disinterested Makima is in other people, and I think that’s pretty rad in its own way, coat and all.
