A new anime based on the popular video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was officially announced during gamescom 2025. The adaptation, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, is being created by Kadokawa Corporation, Crunchyroll, Qzil.la, and ARCH. The anime will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll and no release date has been announced yet.
The anime takes place during Japan’s Sengoku period, when the country was split into many separate nations constantly fighting each other. The story centers on Ashina, a region with sacred land and ancient secrets. Twenty years after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina took control of the area through a violent takeover, a new enemy appears from within called The Interior Ministry.
To protect his homeland, Isshin’s grandson Genichiro uses forbidden powers. The only chance for salvation comes from a kidnapped boy known as the Divine Heir and his silent guardian, a loyal shinobi called Sekiro. The story follows a lord and his servant as they try to bring balance back to a country falling apart.
Director Kenichi Kutsuna shared his thoughts on the project: “We are taking on the monumental task of animating the breathtakingly beautiful ‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’. In doing so, we are pouring every ounce of our artistic vision and passion for beauty into its production. The final product is being crafted to be a truly memorable experience, one that will leave a lasting impression on both dedicated fans of the game and those who are discovering the world of ‘Sekiro’ for the very first time.”

Crunchyroll’s chief content officer Asa Suehira added: “‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’ is a game known for its precision and intensity, and those qualities carry through beautifully in this adaptation. We’re excited to bring ‘Sekiro: No Defeat’ to fans around the world, and honored to work alongside Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and ARCH to expand this iconic story through the medium of anime.”
