Dynasty Warriors: Origins offers a fresh take on the classic hack-and-slash series, blending personal storytelling with strategic combat and challenging gameplay. Set in the Three Kingdoms, it introduces a new protagonist, the wanderer, whose journey is shaped by player choices and faction alliances. With three difficulty levels and deep customization, Origins caters to both veterans and newcomers. I will dive deeply into my full review of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, highlighting its strengths and challenges.

Having spent time up until the start of Chapter 5, the final chapter, I can confidently say that Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a standout entry in the franchise. While it retains core elements of the series, it also redefines the experience, offering a fresh approach that feels more like a standalone title than a direct continuation. It’s also worth noting that Origins stands as the most challenging Dynasty Warriors game I’ve played to date.

The game offers three difficulty levels, with the default “Normal” mode proving quite demanding. However, there’s a built-in system for grinding, allowing players to improve character stats and weapons to make things a bit easier if needed. If you ever feel overwhelmed, the option to lower the difficulty mid-game ensures that the challenge can be adjusted. What stands out the most is the freedom the game offers in experimenting with different playstyles, providing an engaging experience for both veteran and new players alike.

Story: A Personal and Dynamic Approach

Dynasty Warriors: Origins breaks away from the series’ traditional focus on the Three Kingdoms, offering a more personal and dynamic story. Unlike previous entries, this game introduces a unique perspective through the wanderer, who remains an outsider at the start, shifting between the three factions—Shu, Wei, and Wu—without fully committing to any. This early neutrality sets the stage for a story that evolves from the usual historical backdrop into a narrative driven by player choice and character depth.

At the start of Chapter 4, the wanderer’s journey takes a pivotal turn when you’re forced to pick a faction, aligning yourself with their cause and battles. This choice has significant emotional consequences, as you may end up fighting former allies. For instance, if you choose Cao Cao’s faction, you’ll eventually face Shu, who you may have previously helped. The early chapters also feature moments where factions, like Shu and Wei, cooperate against a common threat—one such instance being the challenging Battle of Xiapi, where both factions unite against Lu Bu.

As the game progresses, the story shifts focus to the wanderer’s personal journey. Through interactions, flashbacks, and significant events, players gradually uncover the wanderer’s lost memories. The mysterious figure who frequently appears in their path plays a crucial role in guiding their journey and is deeply connected to their forgotten past. By mid-game, the pieces of the wanderer’s origin begin to fall into place, adding layers of emotional depth to the ongoing Three Kingdoms conflict.

What sets this game apart is its side stories. Before Chapter 4, players can meet characters from all factions, including enemies like Lu Bu, whose motivations for power are explored. If you’re familiar with the Three Kingdoms lore, these interactions offer extra enjoyment, as they blend the game’s unique storyline with the traditional narrative.

For example, Zhuge Liang, whom I encountered early despite aligning with Wei, references key moments like the “Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage.” These interactions add richness to the game, blending familiarity with new twists, while deepening the wanderer’s journey as a witness to major events in the Three Kingdoms era.

Gameplay – Fast-Paced and Engaging Combat

Dynasty Warriors: Origins delivers fast-paced, dynamic combat that keeps players on their toes. The ability to chain combos, utilize a range of skills, and experiment with different weapon combinations ensures each battle feels fresh. Players can focus on various strategies, including crowd control, single-target damage, or defensive maneuvers, depending on the situation.

Special skills and abilities add another layer of depth, offering ways to turn the tide of battle in your favor. However, the fast pace can be overwhelming, especially when surrounded by multiple enemies. It’s important to prioritize objectives, such as defeating key enemies or protecting allies, and be mindful of ambushes. Fortunately, the ability to restart from checkpoints helps minimize frustration after failed objectives.

Despite some difficulty spikes, the flexible combat mechanics offer room for experimentation. Whether playing solo or part of a larger battle, the system ensures each encounter remains unique and rewarding, with high stakes and dynamic action.

Character Customization – A Rewarding Progression System

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, character customization goes beyond just appearance—it’s a key part of both the gameplay and narrative. As you progress, completing side quests becomes essential. Make sure to tackle these before Chapter 4, as you’ll need to choose which faction to follow at the end of Chapter 3. Having a save file handy before making this decision will allow you to explore all the storylines on offer.

These side quests are an enjoyable way to level up and earn rewards. Whether it’s clearing out bandit camps or helping characters with their tasks, each quest offers valuable skill points and rare weapons. Additionally, as you encounter new characters, they’ll appear on the map with their own side stories. You can improve your relationships with these characters by spending money, unlocking more events and making progression faster. Strengthening your bond with a character grants useful rewards like new weapon skills and special tools. Completing challenges from these characters will also reward you with skill points, which can be used to unlock new abilities that enhance your combat options.

Weapon proficiency plays a pivotal role in how you approach combat in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The game features nine distinct weapon types, each offering its own unique mechanics and playstyle: Sword, Spear, Gauntlets, Wheels, Polearm, Staff, Twin Pikes, Lance, and Crescent Blade. As you master each weapon, you’ll unlock exclusive skills that provide more ways to engage with enemies, allowing you to tailor your combat strategy. For example, using the Spear in combination with certain skills can launch enemies into the air, and with the right charge attack, you can keep them immobilized for a time. These varied combinations keep the combat fresh and engaging, making the weapon progression system both strategic and rewarding.

Verdict: A Fresh Take on Dynasty Warriors

Dynasty Warriors: Origins successfully reinvents the franchise, blending personal storytelling, dynamic combat, and strategic depth. The game’s challenging difficulty, combined with character choice and deep personalization, creates an engaging experience for both newcomers and long-time fans. Its focus on character relationships, with rewards for strengthening bonds, adds meaningful depth to the narrative and gameplay, further enriching the experience. Side quests, often linked to character interactions, also provide valuable opportunities for leveling up and obtaining rare items, adding an element of exploration.

While the difficulty can be overwhelming at times, the ability to grind for better stats and adjust the difficulty settings ensures accessibility for players of all skill levels. Additionally, the choice of factions toward the end of Chapter 3 opens up replayability, offering different perspectives on the story.

With its rich narrative, diverse combat mechanics, rewarding progression system, and the added layer of character interactions and side quests, Dynasty Warriors: Origins stands out as one of the most ambitious and enjoyable entries in the series. Whether you’re a fan of the Three Kingdoms or looking for a new experience, this game offers a fulfilling adventure that keeps players engaged from start to finish.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be releasing on January 17, available on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S & Windows PC via Steam. Additionally, Deluxe Edition owners will have access to the full game from January 14 onwards, offering early access upwards to three days.

      PROS

      • The game brings a fresh narrative, focusing on the wanderer’s personal journey rather than the traditional Three Kingdoms tale. This shift makes the story more personal and impactful.
      • With nine weapon types and a skill tree, players have the freedom to experiment with a wide range of playstyles, tailoring the experience to their preferences.
      • The fast-paced combat offers diverse strategies through skills, combos, and weapon combinations, keeping each battle feeling unique.
      • Side quests are more than just filler—they enhance character development and provide additional context, making each companion feel distinct.

      CONS

      • The ally AI can feel underwhelming, while the enemy AI often feels disproportionately strong, creating occasional difficulty spikes that can feel frustrating.
