Mortal Kombat 11 Review – A smooth and bloody satisfying fighting game

First announced during TGA 2018, Mortal Kombat 11 is the latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series as well as the bloody sequel to Mortal Kombat X. It is no doubt that MK11 would be one of the most anticipated fighting game releases in 2019, and now it has finally gone live. We were able to give the full game a try, so check out our Mortal Kombat 11 review below for our opinions about the game!

The Story

The story of Mortal Kombat 11 picks off following the ending of Mortal Kombat X. After Sinnok is defeated by Raiden, Kronika decides to restart history by rewinding time, which in result various timelines were folded together and characters such as Liu Kang run into different versions of themselves. Well, that’s all we could say about the story as we want to avoid spoilers.

Just like its predecessors, MK11‘s story mode features long cinematic scenes with short battle sessions in between. During certain chapters, you will be able to choose a character to fight and there will be different cutscenes. You would probably want to replay the story again more than once to check out all the cutscenes.

The Characters

There are a total of 25 characters available at launch including Shao Khan (pre-order bonus) and Frost (unlock by completing chapter 4). 22 of them are returning ones, while 3 of them are brand new to the series.

The Gameplay

Aside from the story mode, the game comes with plenty of other modes too. In Towers of Time, you will challenge a rotation of characters but there are some requirements you must meet before you are able to challenge. While the Klassic Towers allows you to unlock character endings by defeating a series of AI opponents. The Krypt mode let you unlock gears, items or even finishers using your hard-earned Koins. Of course, there are multiplayer modes where you can battle with others locally or online.

Let’s move to the actual gameplay. If you are a fan, you will know what to expect. Mortal Kombat 11 features the classic bloody combat with smooth controls. It is quite easy to combo, however this doesn’t mean that the game gets easier now because it is still very challenging to land a series of combos. Those who are new to the series would definitely need to go through the tutorial and take some time to train themselves before you face real-world opponents.

Every character comes with their own long list of attacks and combo chains so you will need some training in order to master a character too. X-Rays in Mortal Kombat X is now called Fatal Blow. You can execute a Fatal Blow only once per match, and only available when you are low in HP. Fatality, the most famous feature of the game gets bloody disgusting than ever (and yes, we love it) thanks to the high-quality graphics.

All the characters are highly customizable including the gear, skins, intros, abilities and finishers. Also, we’ve mentioned earlier that there are unlockable ending for each character, but there are more – Concept Arts, Recipes and Music. The game will keep you busy for a long time if you want to collect them all.

Verdict

The good parts from the previous Mortal Kombat series are well preserved in Mortal Kombat 11. The combat is smooth and intense as usual, but gets more satisfying when you view it with more detailed graphics now. Since Mortal Kombat 11 has a ton of depth, it will not be easy for a newbie to master but once you picked up the pace, it would be a fighting game that totally worth your time and money.
