Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no shortage of dedicated fans, and many of them have been eagerly waiting to hear more about what’s next for the game. That wait got a little shorter recently, as we were invited to a hands-on preview event for the upcoming Dark Arisen expansion, where we got to explore the snowy Norgan region and take on new enemies like the Norgan Giant and the Fallen Dragon firsthand. Once the demo wrapped up, we had the chance to sit down with Director Kento Kinoshita and Producer Naoto Oyama to talk about everything coming in the expansion, from tougher boss fights to bigger changes in how players manage their gear.

More Bosses, Areas, and How Long It Will All Take

The Fallen Dragon fight left a strong impression during the preview, and the team confirmed that this is only the beginning of what Norgan has to offer. Kinoshita said more details on bosses and mechanics will be rolled out over time. “There will be additional information given out exponentially in the upcoming months before the release,” he said.

Oyama echoed this, pointing out that the area shown in the demo barely scratches the surface. “The valley mountain that we experienced yesterday during the demo is only just the starting point of the Norgan,” he said. He also confirmed that the base game itself is being expanded alongside the DLC.

“Not only in the Norgan region itself, but also in the actual, the original Dragon’s Dogma 2, the base game itself, there will be 12 additional dungeons added.”

As for how long all of this will take, Oyama broke it down by section. The main Norgan story is expected to run “softly suspected to be around 15 to 20 hours, depending on the player, how they decide to progress the story, and how quickly they play,” he said. Each of the 12 new dungeons adds more on top of that. “Each dungeon is roughly from 30 minutes to 1 hour,” he said, putting the total experience at more than 25 hours.

Vocation and Skill Design, From Player Data to Dark Arisen

The team looked closely at how players actually used vocations and skills in Dragon’s Dogma 2 before deciding how to build on them in Dark Arisen. Some vocations were clearly more popular than others, Oyama said, but that wasn’t going to shape how the team approached the expansion. “The development team’s thinking process is not to prioritize only those vocations and only provide those, but equally give opportunities to each vocation for all players to enjoy the game how they want,” he said.

Kinoshita said the same logic applied to skills. Players tended to lean on a handful of favorites because skill slots were limited, so the team went back and looked at what wasn’t getting used.

“They analyzed which skills are not being set in comparison to other skills and introduced extra skills, more leveled-up versions of that, in order to have players experience more variety in their presets.”

That thinking carried into a bigger decision for Dark Arisen: skill slots are going from four to six, and new skill options are being added through Relics, but there’s no brand-new vocation. Oyama clarified that the slot expansion is actually separate from the DLC. “That part is actually covered not in Dark Arisen, but in the title update for the base game,” he said, meaning every player gets it, DLC or not.

As for why the team didn’t just add a new vocation, Oyama pointed to how invested players already were in the existing ones. “It would be a much more rewarding experience for already existing players to add more skills on top of the currently existing vocations instead of coming up with something completely new,” he said. He added that it expands the possibilities for players in how to build their skill slots and which skills to prioritize or not.

      Frozen Paths and Pawn Bonds

Norgan introduces icy obstacles that block certain paths, and players wanted to know how to get past them. Kinoshita admitted the team couldn’t pinpoint an exact answer without knowing precisely which path was being asked about, but laid out the general options. “There are specific pawn actions that would be available to help you go through that path,” he said. Failing that, progress usually does the trick. “

You need to progress the northern story to some specific points that will give you some items or unlock paths due to some story progression.”

He also noted that the game is built to give players enough to work with on their own. “If you look closely enough, you will be able to see how you should proceed as a player,” he said, so the solution shouldn’t require anything too convoluted.

The environment isn’t just an obstacle, either. Kinoshita confirmed players can turn hazards to their advantage. “Yes, the players will be able to manipulate the environment,” he said. Giant icicles, for example, can be grabbed and thrown, or used to trigger collapses. “Definitely, those options as a part of gameplay are being introduced in the Norgan region,” he said. He framed it as a way to add some flair to combat, describing it as something that would bring a lot of fun and exhilarating emotions to the players.

One of the most talked-about additions from the Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen demo was a new animation where a Pawn helps pull the player up while climbing large enemies. Kinoshita traced this back to behavior updates already added in a June update. “If you set a Pawn with the Archer vocation, they will try to attack big enemies as much as they can to sort of have them collapse and let the player attack them more easily,” he said. Flying enemies get similar treatment.

“The Pawns will try to strike them from the air and have them fall to the ground so the player has easier access to actually attacking those enemies.”

There’s more coming, too. Kinoshita mentioned a cooperative moment his own team added, where launching small enemies into the air lets Pawns follow up with a strike of their own. He also teased new behavior tied to a specific status effect. “The Pawns that have contracted Dragon’s Plague will have specific advancements and have specific actions that will help the player more,” he said.

Oyama clarified the timing on some of the most anticipated additions, the climbing assist animation and Pawns shielding players from attacks. Neither is a Dark Arisen exclusive. “Those will be covered not in the Dark Horizon portion, but in the upcoming August update,” he said, adding that players might get to try it “even before the actual article is even published.”

How Boss Difficulty Scales in Norgan

With the Norgan Giant and the Fallen Dragon already putting up a fight in the demo, the team was asked how much tougher things get from there. Kinoshita explained that difficulty has to keep pace with how strong players become through relics and gear, otherwise “there would be really no point in having challenging gameplay,” he said.

The approach mirrors how the base game handles enemy weaknesses. “If it’s a Griffon, you have to fight them with fire or some specific things like that,” he said, and new Norgan enemies will follow the same idea, each with its own strengths and counters. “Even if they get stronger and stronger, of course the enemies will be more challenging,” he said.

“The game itself will not be too easy when you get really strong relics from your appraisals.”

The Relic Appraisal System and Making Item Management Easier

The Relic Appraisal system in Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen introduces randomized stats and skills to gear, a departure from the base game’s merchant-driven progression. Kinoshita explained the thinking started with a problem: character leveling eventually plateaus. “There is sort of a hard ceiling, where the more you level up, the player doesn’t really level up that much in terms of their attacks and all that,” he said. Relics were designed to give players a new avenue for growth once that ceiling hits.

Player feedback also played into it. According to Kinoshita, a common sentiment kept coming up after the base game’s release: “I still want to play this game more.” That pushed the team to look for ways to expand the action system itself. “So after brainstorming a lot on how they could expand the already pre-existing action system, the team came up with the Relic Appraisal System as a form of hack-and-slash gameplay,” he said. Oyama added that some of this groundwork was already laid in an earlier patch.

“It kind of solves some initial user feedback about some of the rewards from chests or from quests not being enough, so it kind of improves the experience.”

Of course, more relics dropping means more to manage, and the team is aware that can get overwhelming. Kinoshita confirmed new tools are on the way in the August update. “That item management part definitely will be much easier after the August update compared to the current status of the game,” he said, pointing to a new favorites system and vocation-based filtering. “You will be able to filter those by your vocation, your specific needs, and also the things that you marked as your favorites,” he said.

Oyama added one more option for players sitting on too many low-value relics. “Once you sell them in the form of Relics, it gives you back your Link Crystals as a currency that needs to be used for appraisal,” he said, giving players a way to clear clutter without appraising everything first.

      New and Memorable Quests

Fans of the base game’s more unconventional quests, like the Sphinx questline, wanted to know if Dark Arisen would deliver something similar. Kinoshita confirmed the new quests were built to feel distinct from the base game. “Because of this, there are elements not present in the original game that you can enjoy through a fresh approach in Dark Arisen,” he said.

Speaking personally, he added that some of the new questlines hold up just as well as the Sphinx quest in his eyes. There’s more beyond the main story too.

“We have also prepared side questlines, so we hope you will look forward to them!”

With more details expected in the coming months, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen looks to build on what made the base game memorable while giving players fresh challenges, deeper systems, and new ways to explore Norgan.
