Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will get a disc version, easing some concerns after Sony’s recent announcement that it plans to stop producing physical games. The studio shared the news in a post on X, stating simply that God of War Laufey will be available on disc. The message did not include many other details, but it may have quietly pointed to when the game will launch.

Sony has said it will stop making new physical discs starting in January 2028. Only games that come out in 2027 or earlier will still be able to get disc reprints. Since Santa Monica Studio has confirmed a disc release for Laufey, this suggests the game is planned to launch sometime next year, before the cutoff takes effect.
The disc confirmation was posted as part of a thread about the game’s upcoming panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The timing came shortly after Sony’s wider announcement that, beginning in 2028, all new PS5 games will be sold only in digital form through the PlayStation Store and at retailers. That announcement did not sit well with many fans. A petition asking Sony to walk back the decision has already gathered more than 285,000 signatures, showing how strongly some players feel about keeping physical media around.
God of War Laufey itself was revealed last month during a State of Play stream, where Santa Monica Studio showed over 20 minutes of gameplay. The game is being called the next chapter in the God of War series and centers on Faye, also known as Laufey the Just, who is Kratos’s Norse wife and Atreus’s mother. Faye died before the events of the 2018 God of War game.
