The Pokémon Company brought Times Square to life this week with a giant Mewtwo raid, marking 10 years since Pokémon Go first launched. The event recreated the ending of the original Pokémon Go announcement trailer, which showed hundreds of players teaming up to battle Mewtwo in the middle of New York City.

As part of the Pokémon Go 10th Anniversary Celebrations happening in New York, The Pokémon Company took over several billboards across Manhattan’s Times Square. The original trailer played across nearly every screen in the famous square before players in attendance got the chance to battle Mewtwo themselves. This was done through a Unity Raid, a format that allows thousands of players to fight the same Pokémon at once. Trainers who took part were able to catch a special version of Mewtwo that was only available at this event.
The celebration also introduced Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y to the game for the first time. These forms can now be challenged through new Super Mega Raids, which need at least eight trainers with strong, high-level Pokémon to take part. Adding to the challenge, these raid bosses can shield themselves during battle, and only Mega Evolved Pokémon are able to break through those shields.
Pokémon Go first came out in 2016 and quickly became one of the best-selling mobile games ever made. Niantic developed the game, drawing inspiration from an earlier Google Maps prank that placed Pokémon in real world locations. When it launched, the game became a massive cultural moment, with players around the world stepping outside to search for Pokémon in their own neighborhoods.
