New estimates suggest the PlayStation 6 could potentially launch at around $699 (approximately RM2,750–RM2,800) if Sony chooses to subsidize the system’s manufacturing costs. However, analysts warn the console’s actual retail price could realistically climb closer to $1,000 (roughly RM3,900–RM4,000) depending on global component prices and market conditions closer to release.

These projections highlight how uncertain next-generation console pricing remains as the industry prepares for what could be its most expensive hardware cycle yet.

RM2,700 Pricing Is Possible — But Only With Subsidy Support

According to hardware insider KeplerL2, the PlayStation 6 currently has an estimated bill of materials (BOM) of around $750 (about RM2,950) per unit. Because BOM represents manufacturing component costs before logistics, marketing, and retail margins, a $699 launch price would likely require Sony to sell the console at a loss early in its lifecycle.

This strategy is not unusual in the console industry, especially during launch windows where platform adoption is critical. However, rising semiconductor and memory prices mean subsidizing hardware may be more difficult this generation than in previous ones.

If Sony decides not to absorb those costs, the PlayStation 6 could launch significantly higher than the RM3,000 range many players might be hoping for.

Analysts Suggest RM4,000 Consoles Could Become the New Normal

Some industry analysts believe a $999 PlayStation 6 (around RM3,900–RM4,000) is increasingly plausible. Kantan Games CEO Dr. Serkan Toto noted that recent price increases across Sony’s current hardware lineup may signal preparation for more expensive next-generation systems.

Games industry analyst Joost van Dreunen similarly suggested console gaming could increasingly become a “luxury expenditure,” as the pricing gap between consoles and entry-level gaming PCs continues to narrow.

Microsoft’s rumored next-generation Xbox, commonly referred to as Project Helix, is also expected to carry a premium launch price that could exceed $1,000, reinforcing expectations that the upcoming console generation may enter a higher pricing tier overall.

Rising RAM Costs Continue to Influence Next-Gen Hardware Pricing

One major factor shaping PlayStation 6 pricing expectations is the ongoing global DRAM shortage that began in late 2025. The spike in memory and storage component costs has affected manufacturing across PCs, consoles, and consumer electronics alike.

These pressures are already visible in Sony’s current lineup. The PlayStation 5 recently received global price increases, with the PlayStation 5 Slim rising to $649.99 (around RM2,550) and the PlayStation 5 Pro reaching $899 (roughly RM3,500).

With the PlayStation 6 reportedly targeting a release window between 2027 and 2029, fluctuating supply chain costs and memory pricing will ultimately determine whether Sony can realistically deliver a next-generation console closer to RM3,000—or whether players should prepare for something closer to RM4,000 at launch.
