Amidst the recent controversies surrounding game ownership, Xbox unveiled a new disc-to-digital program that will let players claim digital entitlements for supported physical games. According to the announcement, the feature will begin testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31, initially starting with thousands of titles.

Head of Xbox’s Next Generation Jason Ronald attended gamescom to provide further details about the program. He stated that the new feature brings all the benefits and flexibility of digital to players who have physical games.
Ronald also acknowledged how their audience has purchased Xbox games across multiple generations in the console’s 25-year lifetime thus far. He stated how players have memories tied to their libraries and Xbox’s goal is to bring those special moments through game preservation.

The program is designed to work with most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. How it would work is that players can insert a supported game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console, launch the title, and claim its digital entitlement.
Upon claiming, players can access the game digitally without needing to insert the disc into their console. This also allows them to take advantage of Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where supported, while their physical discs continue to work as normal.
The Disc-to-Digital Program benefits players with large physical libraries. While not every physical game will be eligible for it initially, the company promises to continue adding supported titles.
