Square Enix has clarified that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will not support an upgrade path between the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 systems. This confirmation comes ahead of the game’s October 30, 2025 launch and is detailed in the official FAQ published by the publisher.

The highly anticipated remake is set to launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. However, players eyeing both Nintendo platforms should be aware that progress and ownership are not transferable between the two versions. The Switch release “cannot be upgraded,” with Square Enix stating that there are “no plans for such an upgrade path in the future.”
Additionally, DLC compatibility is also split. Codes for add-on content are locked to their respective versions, meaning DLC obtained on the Switch 2 cannot be redeemed on the original Switch version and vice versa.
A separate Game-Key Card edition has also been confirmed for the Switch 2 version, further emphasizing the clear platform distinction between both releases.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake packages the first two titles of the legendary Erdrick Trilogy in the same stylized HD-2D engine used in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Players with save data from the third game can unlock exclusive animal-themed outfits in both titles, while digital pre-orders will include the “trouble-free travel kit,” a bundle of helpful enhancement items.
Pre-orders are now open across all platforms ahead of the October 30 launch. Players are advised to carefully choose their platform of preference, as cross-system upgrades will not be available.
