Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward is now offering free Final Fantasy XIV in-game items to Japanese players as a reward for contributing taxes through Japan’s “Furusato Nozei” system. According to Famitsu, the collaboration is between Shibuya Ward and Square Enix, and the reward package is worth at least $88 USD based on the items’ listed prices on the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store.

The Furusato Nozei, or “hometown tax contribution” system, lets Japanese residents direct a portion of their income tax to a specific city of their choosing instead of having it all go to the central government. The chosen city then sends gifts back to the contributor. These are usually local goods like fresh produce, rice, or wagyu beef, but in recent years, more unconventional rewards have started appearing, including NFTs and digital prizes.

Shibuya Ward has been exploring this kind of digital reward before. Last year, it worked with mobile games Monster Strike and Kotodaman to offer in-game currency as a tax contribution reward. This year, it is going bigger with a full Final Fantasy XIV item bundle.

The reward package includes five Phials of Fantasia, which let players change their character’s appearance, race, and gender. Players also get the Collegiate Attire (Skirt) and Collegiate Attire (Slacks) costume sets, the Magitek Attire, four dance emotes, and a Megashiba mount. The Megashiba is a nod to Shibuya’s own Hachiko statue, the famous bronze dog outside Shibuya Station.

All of these items are purely cosmetic and can otherwise be bought with real money on the official store. For now, this makes Japan one of the few places in the world where paying your taxes can land you a new mount and a wardrobe change in an MMO.
