After being rumoured to star in the Sony Pictures Helldivers movie adaptation, Alan Ritchson has officially been confirmed to join its cast. However, those who were hoping to see the SEAF troopers in action will have to wait longer to see the video game adaptation hit cinemas.

In a recent announcement, Sony Pictures revealed that the Helldivers movie will be pushed all the way back a year. It was initially slated to release on November 10, 2027, and now the company is eyeing a June 9, 2028 window.

Ritchson was in talks to join the project after Jason Momoa’s exit in June earlier this year for unknown reasons. Now, it appears that the Reacher star is leading the adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ cooperative shooter.

The Amazon original is considered Ritchson’s big break, and his performance as the fictional intimidating character is spectacular. Meanwhile, Justin Lin will helm the project, who’s best known for directing the esteemed Fast and Furious saga.

Lin will also produce alongside Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash of PlayStation Productions, with his production company, Perfect Storm Entertainment, involved in the film. Gary Dauberman, whose previous writing credits include It and Annabelle, penned the screenplay.

Further details regarding the movie, including how much of the game’s satirical comedy will make the final cut, have been kept under wraps. For now, fans would have to wait a little longer to see how the fight for democracy would play out on the big screen.

As for Arrowhead Game Studios themselves, they’ve stated this in the initial announcement:

“We are not Hollywood people, and we don’t know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don’t, and shouldn’t, have final say.”
