Developer C#4R4CT3R just launched a free Steam demo for their upcoming lo-fi psychological suspense adventure, Rain98. The demo, which reportedly features more than three hours of gameplay, launched alongside a new trailer unveiled at The MIX Fall Game Showcase 2026.
Set in 1998 Tokyo, the game lets players venture into the rain-soaked streets of Shibuya while accompanying Reina Amehara, a mysterious girl who has the power to end the world. After being transported back in time, players find themselves sharing an unusual daily life with Reina while helping her carry out a ritual intended to bring about humanity’s end.
Rain98 differs from usual visual novel storytelling by combining adventure segments and mini-games, rather than focusing solely on dialogue. Moreover, the game features opportunities to explore Tokyo, including odd jobs, which can help Reina cover her living expenses.
Pick up a few things at the convenience store,
do a little part-time work at home,
or play a few rounds of cards together.Turn these little everyday moments into stickers, and fill up your Angel Passport one by one.

Everyday interactions also play a role in the game’s central premise. Players can give Reina special gifts and collect stickers for her Angel Passport, gradually progressing the ritual. The seemingly comfortable routine is complicated by the secrets surrounding Reina and the unsettling events that follow her changing moods.
The demo covers the opening of the story through the first half of Chapter 2, with the developer planning to add the remaining portion of the chapter in a future update. It supports nine languages, including English, Japanese, Korean, French, and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Visually, Rain98 draws on the atmosphere of late-1990s Tokyo, pairing retro cityscapes and blurred neon lights with rainfall, ambient sounds, and lo-fi music. The full game is expected to offer approximately 10 to 15 hours of gameplay when it launches in 2027.
