Nintendo has rolled out a significant system update for the Switch family of consoles, introducing several forward-looking features that bridge the original Switch ecosystem with the upcoming Switch 2. Version 20.0.0 includes the highly anticipated Virtual Game Cards functionality, GameShare compatibility with Switch 2, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
Virtual Game Cards and GameShare
The most notable addition is the Virtual Game Cards, accessible through a new icon on the HOME Menu. This feature transforms purchased digital software, downloadable content, and select free software into virtual game cards that users can manage through a dedicated interface.
Users can now virtually load and eject these digital titles between up to two Nintendo Switch systems, offering unprecedented flexibility for those who own multiple consoles. Additionally, the system supports lending virtual game cards to family members within the same Nintendo Account family group.
The update introduces GameShare functionality, allowing compatible software to be shared from a Nintendo Switch 2 system to nearby original Switch consoles for local multiplayer sessions. This feature requires local wireless communication and must be initiated from the newer Switch 2 hardware. Nintendo notes that GameShare cannot be used between two original Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite systems.
Enhanced Security and System Transfer Options
To protect digital libraries, a new User-Verification Settings option has been added, enabling PIN protection or Nintendo Account sign-in requirements for accessing the Virtual Game Card menu. The update also adds Online License Settings, allowing users to play their downloaded software while connected to the internet, even without having the virtual game card loaded.
For those planning to upgrade to Switch 2, a comprehensive System Transfer feature now supports both local and server-based transfers. The server option is specifically designed for users who may lose access to their original Switch before receiving their Switch 2.

Other enhancements include refreshed Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Switch News icon colors, the ability to transfer multiple save files simultaneously, and updated appearances for select user icons. Moreover, the 20.0.0 update represents one of the most substantial system revisions in the platform’s history, laying groundwork for Nintendo’s cross-generation strategy as it begins transitioning to the Switch 2 hardware.
